Please do keep us informed. I may not wait for a year or two. Just wanna see Win 7 bed in a little and see what's going on with i7 and a few other things before I spend any money.

Guys don't wait, just get it now, it is worth every penny. Programs start in less than 0.5s, system is very smooth, booting is super fast (Ubuntu under 10s ) and it is silent. I had three regular hard drives in my rig, I took them out and intalled SSD. My case temp and noise levels dropped like a stone. Right now SSD is the only drive in my rig, other three are in a server/media pc in another room. I don't think you can make an upgrade that will provide bigger a jump in computing experience. Regarding warranties, do you really need more than 5 years? Surely you will want to upgrade before then as speed will be much higher with new devices.

I'm planning on getting an SSD within a month or so, ready to install Win7 on as soon as it arrives.
I hear it makes substantial differences to the current bane of my life: boot time. Not that it will take too long anyway with a fresh OS install.

Bloody hell!
My missus called me at work and said a couple of packages had been delivered for me.
I thought I was coming home to a evening of SSD fun.
Nope. The packages contained Kaspersky 2010 and a NB waterblock.
Gutted.

Let us know your thoughts/comments please as I'm looking to get an SSD in the next two weeks and cannot make mind up from Crucial or the OCZ Vertex.

That would be my quandary. I'm inclined to think the backup and support from a premium brand like OCZ is worth paying for, on what is essentially emerging tech. But everybody likes a bargain!

The Crucial M225 and the OCZ Vertex drives are essentially identical. The M225 will be updated with the same firmware releases as the Vertex, but Vertex owners will have access to beta firmware updates and will receive their firmware releases earlier.

SSD fitted and running a fresh windows XP install. It's so frigging fast! I am hugely impressed, this is one of those upgrades that you really feel is worthwhile when you experience it. I've installed the usual stuff, MS office, Nero, Kaspersky, firefox, printer drivers etc... My system tray is as full as it ever gets, I don't usually have more than 6 or 7 icons in there. Boot time is around 27 seconds. The instant the desktop appears, it's usable. None of this waiting around for a few seconds before you can open my computer. I ran a full virus scan whilst running updates then I tried to open MS word, it took about half a second. I haven't installed any games yet, but I have no reason to doubt the claims about level loading times. The installation wasn't without it's problems, WinXP setup could see the drive but refused to install on it, even Win7 RC hung during installation, when I tried that instead. I installed a fresh copy on one of my F1s then cloned the drive onto the SSD. I used the evaluation copy of Acronis True Image 2010 from download.com, it's fully functional for 30 days, the whole process took less than 10 minutes. BTW, I cancelled my order with novatech, they said they weren't expecting any drives from Crucial until Oct 30th! I ordered it last night from Dabs, on next day delivery and it arrived at 11am this morning. Seriously chaps, get one now. They are marvellous. BTW don't forget to order a 2.5" to 3.5" bracket to mount it in your case. Regards Spreadie

I was just going to either tape it or velcro it to the inside base of my tower.

Nah, they don't produce much, if any, heat.

Cool, who did you order it from? I don't suppose the 'old kit' includes a Q9650 by any chance? Looking to get one to extend the life of my system, can't quite stretch to a Core i5/i7 upgrade. Well, I could but I'd be living in the shed with the rabbit.

Well funny you should mention it but the cpu I'm replacing is the QX9650 - been running happily slightly o/c at 3.3Ghz for about 12-13months now but fancied a change - gonna sell it along with the mobo and 4Gb ram - think it's an Akasa Nero cooler on it.
