I've liked all the Apple mice, up to the hockey puck. From then on, IMHO, things went a bit silly. Somethings you just get right, more or less, on the first outing.

About time, the Mighty Mouse is a nice idea, but the implementation is severely flawed. Having it ergonomically shaped, so that it doesn't cramp the had with extended use, would be a good start. Most other mice grew ergonomic forms a decade ago.

I still use a Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 - they restarted selling them, here, last year.

The scroll ball is an excellent idea, but I spent more time cleaning the ball in the end than actually being able to use it without it failing.

Well, it fits my hand nicely, ta. The last "proper" Apple ADB mouse was an excellent design. I found the hockey puck to be a disaster, where form took over function to the nth degree. The current design of the oval , which originally came in with the Cube IIRC, is probably the best mouse style I've used in ages.

I'll agree with you about the scroll ball, though.

The problem I have with the "mighty" mouse is that if you rest your right finger on it and press with your index finger then it registers as a right click not a left click.

When I use a mouse I don't want to have to lift each finger off the mouse in order to press the other button.

The mighty mouse destroys that illusion of quality in one fell swoop. It feels light and tacky, and the scroll wheel feels rather fragile.

I agree with you. I have the wireless unibutton version, and that feels like a proper mouse, what with the batteries and all.

Oli, I don't think you're doing it right. I don't have to lift the finger far for the other to still register.

I think Oli's point is, if he isn't pressing with the right-most finger, it shouldn't register. I let my fingers rest on the mouse, only when I press a button is the press recognised - so I can click with my index finger and have my middle finger on the scroll wheel and my ring finger on the right button and only a left click is registered.

Due to the MM's resistive(?) technology, this doesn't work, the left click becomes a right click, if you don't have the mouse in uni-button mode.

+1 for the Apple mouse. It's obviously a Marmite thing. My scroll ball will go for months if I avoid cake and pastry at the desk . But obviously people have different skin secretions and these variations are not catered for by the scroll ball. It's dry or nothing for Apple.

The scroll ball is great on mine.
It's just the shape & the plastic I don't like.

A brushed alu one to match the keyboards would be nice.

That's the mouse I use at work.

It looks very gimmicky on the website but it's very comfortable to use fits my hand very nicely and is weighted perfectly (with adjustable weights).

One thing I need from a mouse is back and forwards buttons when navigating websites or directoires on my computer looking for or comparing files etc...

The scroll wheel is very responsive and the buttons are separate so I can rest my finger on the right button (for instance) when pressing the left mouse button. (This is what I don't seem to be able to do with the "mighty" mouse.)

Another problem I have with the "mighty" mouse is the responsiveness of the cursor movement. Whenever I use it on my brother's MBP (with Snow Leopard 2.6GHz? CPU and 4GB RAM) I always feel there is a delay between when I move the mouse and when the cursor starts moving. It feels like there is an elastic band attached between the cursor and the mouse instead of them being directly linked (if that makes sense).

I think that's an Apple patent.

Meeces are obviously very personal things. Which is why it's nice now you can use any USB mouse you like with your Mac, unlike the olden days when they used a proprietary serial connector.

Seriously though, I do like the Mighty Mouse, it feels comfortable in my hand and is nicely suited to left and right handed users, I occasionally swap if my right wrist begins to hurt.
