Tried Linux - hate it but it's free and legal so I use it.

I've got a PC and an iPod touch. Not tehnically a Mac computer I guess but I use the wi-fi, browser, email, media... basically more than I use the PC!

Oh, I didn't know you were a Mac guy. What machine did you have?

It was a mate's G4 iMac (a while ago I know). I had it for a few weeks but I just found it non-specifically annoying. I know it's not owning but I really did give it a go.

Well they don't suit everyone. The more "under the hood" types tend not to like OS X very much. Unless that is they are really at home with the command line. *shudder*

Girlfriend thinks I'm crazy, having bought her eldest daughter the 13" MBP and the youngest the Mac mini - they were both over the moon when I set them up for them yesterday and copied all their data across!

Might I be permitted a slight tangent?

I have an XP Pro desktop and an XP Pro laptop. I know nothing about Macs at all and when trying to use one they frustrate me endlessly, but that's probably just because I've never taken the time to learn MacOS. They do seem nicer lately. I tried Ubuntu and loved the look and feel of it, but couldn't figure out how to install stuff, got fed up and gave up. And now I've pre-ordered (just for you Heather) Win7 Pro. On a related note, I hate lots of pedantic, stupid, niggly things about the iPhone like it's proprietary nature, bluetooth, MMS etc. but I can't deny that the UI is the best currently available on any phone or PC arguably.

I just came back from a DJ show at the NEC and there where Macs everywhere. Just about everyone running DJing software, or anything else tbh was using either an iMac or an MB of some kind. My question is this, for those of you who voted "yes", do the two co-exist in your life? Do you transfer files between them and share networks etc. Do you start working on something on one and finish it on the other? Can you share email? etc. etc. etc.

Also, sub-question, how the [LIFTED] do they get away with the pricing for their laptops?! Compared to an equivalently specced Windows machine they're extortionate. Are they that much better, or is it the Apple tax?

Yes and no. I could share it all, but I don't. I do just about everything on my Mac and where the software is PC only, I put it on the PCs hard drive over the LAN, then do the work needed in that software, then put it back on my Mac.



I'm not up on the laptop market, but I was always under the impression that they weren't too bad when compared like for like. I've never had an Apple laptop myself, because they don't make a cheap one and I'm not in the high end market, but not being cheap doesn't mean being bad value.

I have a friend who is a live music producer (recording bands for the radio). We were at uni together, and he was a PC person the whole time I knew him there, when we shared a flat he'd mock my Mac. Now, however, you'd prize his MBP and his Pro at work from his cold dead hands.
He's DJ'd from the MBP in clubs, the laptop and the Pro deals with all the bands that come through his studio. At home, he's bought 2 Macs.

All decent multi media software is designed for macs.

Apple get away with the prices for their laptops because they last longer. We are still using 5/6 year old laptops at work and I have machines that are about 9 years old at home and still running well so really you get more for your money from Apple.

At home I just have macs (umm about 8 at the moment lol) although I do have an old PC laptop that I'm going to sell / give away. My boyfriend has now gone from PC to Mac and he finds it very easy to use once he got out of the windows mentality.

At work I have to use macs and PCs as I support both. I generally use my PC for email and admin and the mac for anything else. My heart is and will always be with Macs as they have provided me with work for most of my adult life.

I think that they are priced a little cheaper than an equivalent Sony.

They are more expensive here than in the States. I don't like that much.

Maybe this is asking for trouble, but could someone please explain why Macs are "better" than Windows then?

I suppose I'm asking because my XPS is three years old now and the power adapter is flaky, as is the wi-fi. The rest of it works superbly and I could replace the adapter and the wifi is probably just a software thing. Thing is it's 17" and only has an 80gb hdd which is not really practical for DJ use. So I looked up MB Pros and nearly fell off my chair at the prices.

That's a good point. I have a two and a half year old MBP and I've upgraded the memory and stuff but it still competes with what you can buy in the shops brand new.

It's showing now signs of slowing down either.
