That's a total of £14. What happened to the other £1?

Except it's not, because the £2 in the waiter's pocket is from the £12 the ladies pay between them...

Yes but...

The ladies paid £4 each (5 - 1).

Three ladies = £12.

The waiter has £2.

12 + 2 = £14.

Adding up you get these amounts. What you showed is the same as the story.

(This was in reply to Bish but JonLumb got in there first :D)

Well no, not really, words just make math questions look longer.

Look at my breakdown on the previous page. :)

You're looking at it alll wrong :)

Um, Ladies pay £12. Bill is £10. Remainder is £2, which we find in the waiter's pocket.

I understand what you put on the other page.

But if you ask any of the ladies how much they paid they will say £4. (As they paid £5 each and got £1 back).

That's a total of £12.

The waiter has £2 in his pocket. That's £14.

Still we're £1 down.

Exactly.

The £15 is thrown in to be misleading.

Well, yeah. But if you look at if from a mathematical angle, I'm right. :)

The misleading part is saying that the ladies paid £12 and then adding on the £2 that the waiter has, when the £2 comes out of the 12.

Okay, then.

Try this one! ;D

A farmer wants to cross a river and take with him a wolf, a goat, and a cabbage. There is a boat that can fit himself plus either the wolf, the goat, or the cabbage. If the wolf and the goat are alone on one shore, the wolf will eat the goat. If the goat and the cabbage are alone on the shore, the goat will eat the cabbage.

How can the farmer bring the wolf, the goat, and the cabbage across the river?

Takes Goat, leaves wolf and cabbage

Comes back, takes Wolf, returns with goat

Takes cabbage, leaving goat

Returns, and finally picks up the goat

Here's one, prove that:

x^n + y^n = z^n has no integer solutions for x,y,z when n > 2.

;)

It's trivial, all you have to do is prove that every modular form can be mapped to every elliptic form.

I don't know what you're whinging about ;)
