If you are using an unofficial memory unit with your Xbox 360 then you had better back up your data onto an authorised Microsoft 360 storage device quick sharp, as the next 360 update will shut-out third party devices from working with your console.

FYI...

Are M$ mental? The net's gonna love this  ;)

That’s a spot draconian. What IS the problem with backing up your data elsewhere? Are Microsoft nuts?

At the moment, I’m happy to say that the PS3 is pretty liberated in this respect. I can, for example, slap in a new HD, and the PS3 even comes with utilities so I can take backups over a USB connection and restore later if needed.

It's becoming the only way to stop counterfeit memory cards flooding the market

By kicking the users rather than counterfeiters? Charming. Alternatively, how about charging less for the official ones?

One solution is not to upgrade your Xbox.

I thought the 360 had a hard drive? Why does it need a memory card as well? :?

The hard drive was an extra expense if you bought the Core version, so many opted for the memory unit. Plus in the event of an inevitable failure, it was useful to have an additional backup.

Well kicking the counterfeiters hardly worked for the R4, even then Nintendo have to target the shops selling it and not the manufacturers as under the R4 guise many release the cards (R4 no longer exists and hasn't for some time now)....
And it's needed as 360 piracy is much more common than PS3 due to the software not being extremely expensive to purchase media/burners for

Just look at the Wii piracy, it's possible by connecting an external hard drive or even SD card to play downloaded games and is so easy it's incredible

and yawn at the typical MS suck posts, Apple have been doing this for some time, if the PS3 wasn't using Blu Ray it would likely have the same problem, the equivalent issue is in the PSP currently and piracy on that is stupidly high also. You can't blame a company for wanting to protect it's products

I would have thought that games piracy was more of a concern to them than the counterfeit chips. If games can be pirated much more easily then Microsoft are losing out on their stream of royalties. That might be the real reason for the clampdown.

I can only assume that the hardware is in some way involved in the playing of the hardware. The games wouldn't be easily pirated if the dvd drives couldn't be flashed (like Brad was trying to obviously do) but I have to assume the HDD and memory units could be used also

Typical MS, they can't get the console tax on the memory devices, so they disable them instead.
