There seams to be a problem with up grading from window vista to windows 7

as in it can take hours and hours to up grade - some writers (BBC) have said it has taken 8 hours!!!!!!!

this is ture? any one else having this sort of problem?

I already know about the bug that makes the upgrade computer hang at 62%

This problem only affects those who decide to keep all there data on the same hard drive/partition.
For me as i decided to install on a nice spanking clean hard drive took a mind numbingly slow 20 mins

Did a clean install, 20 minutes from DVD boot to working desktop (all drivers installed).

The problem is that it will attempt to index existing data on the machine. Best bet is to disconnect any drives with data on until after the install is complete, then reconnect them (or restore the data), then it will index it in the background.

I have a new computer that I have just built.

It has two drives in it - one 160GB HDD for office and windows and another 1TB HDD for games and other data.

So to make this as painless as possable I should disconect the 1TB drive - even through it has not that much data on - it just a has few games instailed - and do an upgrade of windows 7 when I get it in the mail

I 'upgraded' with an 'upgrade' edition from er, Windows 7 RC to Windows 7 Professional.

All done and dusted within 30 minutes. Only annoyance was having to delete the Windows.old folder, but that was no biggy really.

My bits are on their way back to me after the motherboard developed a fault. If it requires another bloody phone activation for my current install, I may well downgrade it to Windows 7 just for a quiet life.

Hmmm from DVD going in to a desktop was about 20 minutes.

Still trying to get my SB XFi working it doesn't believe me when I tell it what it is Down loading 200 Mb of drivers at the moment

Only real puzzle is Outllook 2007 won't let me read and open my pld pst files ( about 10 Gb of them ) any thoughts on that one?

I did an upgrade (Vista64 Ultimate to Win7 64 Ultimate) on my laptop, forgot to unplug the external 250GB HDD which has about 200gig of data (Music and Photos) on it.
I reckon the upgrade took about 50 mins of which about 30 mins seemed to be stuck whilst I presume, due to the thrashing noise, that the drive was being indexed.
On the plus side I haven't had the constant HDD activity light that I got for the first week of Vista so I suppose that half an hour is a small price to pay.
First impressions are:-
No hassles with upgrade, drivers for everything without interweb searching
3 programs were "incompatible", none were vital, Approach had issues apparently with Vista too but I'm not sure what, a Canon program that I should have uninstalled ages ago and some old Intel WiMax thingy that I downloaded by mistake when looking for a wifi driver. Removing the last two would have stopped pop up warnings in Vista so I thought I'd take the hint with Win7.
I like the cleaner Windows Explorer look, I like the way you can split two documents across the screen and I like the pin the icon to the taskbar thingy, it might make my desktop tidier.
I don't like the way that Win7 just doesn't "look" different enough to Vista, I haven't spent this much money for a double height taskbar
Super Pi doesn't crash randomly in win 7 like it does in Vista64 and it runs (slightly) faster too.
Despite the fact that normally I'd clean install a new OS I have to say that so far I've had no problems with the upgrade, admittedly this installation of Vista is relatively recent having gone from 32 to 64 bit Vista only recently on the laptop.
