We went out looking for my sister once thinking she was missing - turned out she had been out the back then rather silently walked upstairs and went to bed after that room had been checked

And yeah, my brother did the exact same thing kinda, we looked EVERYWHERE called out the police and everything, it was only when I needed to get a recent picture of him, and need to go under his bed to get the photos from the previous holiday, i found him, asleep sucking his thumb!

How do people ever think they're gonna get away with a full-on investigation that involves child safety?

The thing about this story that instantly rang alarm bells for me was that it was a helium filled balloon and, from the pictures appeared to be essentially seamless. Any human being in there would have asphyxiated in a couple of minutes in that sort of environment.
It would have helped if they had asked a chemist or someone with basic knowledge of chemistry or biology before calling out the emergency services.

There was mention of a basket underneath the balloon. Otherwise the kid would have been high pitched for his last few minutes of his life. As you say he would have suffocated in a pure helium atmosphere.

I take your point but from all the video footage I've seen the basket was inside the balloon not slung underneath it. There didn't seem to be any sort of mounting points visible on the external surfaces that would have supported the wires/cables for a basket outside the balloon.

Silly parents.

Yes but the whole even was a hoax. Parents doing time for Christmas I guess.
