http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/devon/8327978.stmI'm sorry, but if I was the university chancellor I'd have the muppets expelled. None of this nambypamby "we wish them well for a speedy recovery" nonsense. If they're stupid enough to try to brand each other with hot coat hangers, they are too stupid to be in higher education.

The Vice Chancellor at Exeter is a complete arse tbh, and students = money, so they aren't going to go.
The Chancellor is Floella Benjamin, who's awesome.

[quote="jonlumb"] .... is a complete arse tbh, and students = money, so they aren't going to go. I think you might just have nailed it and contradicted yourself in one go there.

Exactly. That's what happens when you try and get 50% of the population to go to university when far less are appropriate for it.

Every day I see plenty of evidence that any sort of intellect is no longer a requirement for entry to higher education. Example : Just today I had a request from a student to retrieve some email he had deleted. Two years ago. When told this wasn't possible, he threatened legal action unless we got in a 'computer forensics expert' to 'examine the disk his email had been stored on'. This was a computer science student, by the way. Jon

I did some pretty stupid things at college. Despite being quite intelligent, I was also young and foolish.

That proposal for retro-actively vetting anyone who works with the public could be dynamite - how many student doctors etc were arrested in their younger days for indecency, which is to say p1ssing up a wall? Those convictions aren't always weeded even if they should've been I suspect it'll be toned down though, just enough to be stupidly annoying without any real benefit, but still making money for someone...

Give him an estimate of the cost of recovery of the data (should be several £k) and then see if he still wants it.

I knew a tattoo artist and shop owner in central London who had a noughts & crosses game branded onto his forearm. Despite it being done by someone with a lot of experience in the area, the brands went too deep and it damn near killed him. He spent 3 days awake with his arm immobile and wrapped in cling film to try and prevent infection. His advice was that he'd never have it done again, and this is from someone who once graced the cover of Bizarre due to his unique appearance.

Everyone does stupid things in their youth. So fecking what. They shouldnt be expelled for it. I knew someone who took a wizz up the side of a cop car when he was a student (and drunk). The car was full of coppers at the time. Brilliant. He's now a copper himself. I'm not even going to go into the crazy 5hit me and my friends got up to. Needless to say we all graduated. Two are physiotherapists (one is an amatuer European MMA champion too), two are coppers, one is a fireman, one an IT professional , etc etc

Hang on - "having a whizz" up the side of a cop car is not the same as branding each other with red hot wire coat hangers.
Or am I missing something?
Stupid japes while at uni is expected. It's part of growing up. A level of stupidity where a person is likely to be scarred for life is something else.

No its not the same. But as far as I can tell the only people they hurt with their stupidity is themselves. They're the ones carrying the scars. I dont see why that should result in them being expelled.

Because it then rams home to them just how stupid they've been. You do stupid things, you take the consequences. It's a life lesson.
