Hang on - "having a whizz" up the side of a cop car is not the same as branding each other with red hot wire coat hangers.

Or am I missing something?

Stupid japes while at uni is expected. It's part of growing up. A level of stupidity where a person is likely to be scarred for life is something else.

Agreed. These twats shouldn't have a place there. But as Jon says, it's cash. Perhaps he knows who they are? I'd be willing to be Daddy drives a Porsche, they're from the home counties and regularly hang out in Subway on Queen Street....

I dont see why that should result in them being expelled.

Because it then rams home to them just how stupid they've been. You do stupid things, you take the consequences. It's a life lesson.

It still makes no sense. They have harmed themselves. Why should they then be expelled? If I go home tonight and set fire to my hair performing some dumb party trick it doesnt mean work get to fire me.

The consequence for their stupidity is that they're scarred for life.

If you set fire to your hair while at work, you'd be in trouble. I understand the "branding exercise" took place at a private party, but...

So it wasn't a random "we're all bladdered, let's stick red hot pokers in our eyes" event. Show leniency to these idiots now, and they'll think they're invincible when they leave university with whatever qualifications they manage to get, and heaven knows what sort of idiocy they'll show in the workplace.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

100% disagree, yes. They did it in their own time and only to themselves. The fact it was planned means nothing either. You have obvoiusly passed judgement on these people (whom you dont personally know) based on one act of stupidity and have proposed they'll even show some form of idiocy in the workplace. How do you know that then? People grow and learn from mistakes and change.

Yes, they do. I did. But I didn't have to maim myself to do it.

There's a certain level of common sense that we seem to be intent on breeding out of our young people these days.

HK normally I agree with you but in this case I have to differ
As it was done by themselves to themselves then thats it - its their private business. Its no different to having a tattoo in that respect

I knew someone who took a wizz up the side of a cop car when he was a student (and drunk). The car was full of coppers at the time. Brilliant. He's now a copper himself.

That was his entrance assessment, unless it was Northumbria police in which all you have to do is apply three times and they'll take pity on you.
