Next up is "To Aru Kagaku no Railgun"

This was on my list, and I watched the second episode last night.

I'm not sure what I was expecting exactly. Suffice to say I had not read the manga, and wasn't expecting such a sadomasochistic Yuri loli-fest.

There has been no real character development of Misaka, and Mikoto is even more annoying than ever. However, it's quite impossible not to be drawn into her obsessions and share her delicious pain. Suffice to say, I will not be dropping this sideshow. . .

I take it back.

I just watched ep. 5 and there is now some serious character development. Mikoto is really showing some soul, and I couldn't help crying for half of it

24 episodes yeah :D

I just watched episode 6. Towards the end, I was thinking "wow - there's nothing even slightly ecchi about this. It's a great story and not sordid at all". And then 20:52 happened

Need to catch up one episode of Railgun and 2 episodes of Darker than Black. Borderlands came out on the PC and me and my friends have been playing that quite a lot.

Also, how are you finding Nyan Koi! and Kimi ni Todoke?

Me and my flatmate find the former hilarious and probably the most fun anime to watch this season.

The latter i started on my own and it's probably been above average but not amazing. The washed out colours and draw style are a bit different which i think gives it a slight edge.

Yeah, Nyan Koi! is a lot of fun. It's something I certainly look forward to every week, although I think it's fair to say it won't go down in history as a masterpiece. I need to have at least one fun show like this every season though, and it's keeping me entertained.

Kimi ni Todoke is very different. I picked up on it because it was about the only animé labeled as Shoujo that people seem to be watching, and I'm a sucker for the sentimental. Within a few seconds of watching the first episode I was having doubts over the style of the OP, and then the overly saturated colours of the actual animation. I quickly adjusted though, and I'm loving it. I love Sawako's voice, and her deathly grin reminds me so much of someone I can't quite place. I'm not sure if maybe I saw a preview, or if it was someone from school. I think I've cried a little every episode

edited for slightly bizarre mistake

It's still on my Amazon wish list, which is looking quite long and expensive. I may drop some very direct hints nearer Christmas

I've only watched it once - I kinda got the feeling I'd need to see more Anime to truly appreciate it ;) , but some of the fighting and acrobatic scenes are brill IMO :D

I agree with Nyan Koi! not being a masterpiece, however i find that recently very few shows have made me and my friends laugh so hard. Especially since i'm rather vulnerable to the slapstick / relationship misunderstandings humour.I have to say the only series i can remember finding funnier was Clannad during certain parts which i find rather strange since it tipped the scales on so many levels (humour, emotion, storyline, character development) and is probably why it's so highly regarded.

As for Kimi ni Todoke i actually finished watching the last two episodes between the backlog of Nyan Koi! and other stuff, it's certainly reminded me of how... "good" it is although i can't say it's up there with say Clannad (since i mentioned it before). The character's are engaging and its flicks between humour and emotional/sentimental. TBH i'm rather surprised that you said it was about the only anime labelled as shounen? I mean i would have thought that say Railgun and Darker than Black (although would that be more Seinen ¬.¬) would be more popular. Especially since Shounen gets attached mainly to action series like the aforementioned animes and stuff like Bleach, Naruto etc.

Oh and as for Sawako's smile, the first thing i thought of was similarities between her and Ryuuji from Toradora! since they're both initially treated as "outcasts" due to their... awkward looks when they "smile".

Also as you mentioned crying a little every episode (:P) and i mentioned Clannad, have you watched Ef - A Tale of Memories yet? If you like your... "sentimental" then as i've said before it's really rather good on a clannad level at evoking emotion and it has bolder colours than Clannad (which already looks very good). It's produced by the same company that animate Bakemonogatari (SHAFT) so it's of a rather high quality. Definitely recommend it :P.

LMAO, I was rather surprised when I read that. It's not what I meant at all, but looking up I see it is indeed what I said! It's been a long day, but it's not often I confuse girls and boys  - I've edited the post to say "Shoujo" which is what I meant.

Hmm, I see where you're coming from but that's not the face that's bugging me. I'll probably remember in about 10 years time and resurrect this thread then

Not yet, but I it's sat here waiting for me to catch up. I'll probably have a marathon session this weekend :D

I've picked up a few more series now, so I'll be posting again later in the week :)

I really like Sawako. Someone on MAL has this as their avatar, from the recent episode:

Image

I know it's only a cartoon, but seeing her happy really warms my heart.

Railgun was rather good this week too. I'm a little puzzled at the time line compared to Index, but I'm putting it down to a "different PoV" and just enjoying the story.

Nyan Koi was brilliant as usual. Random mail lady made me laugh a lot, and the buff cat was bonkers. Bra, lol.

I started watching Yumeiro Patissiere last week, nearly caught up now. It's my replacement for Kirarin and it's surprisingly good for a kid's show. I just want to believe it's the exception to rule 34.

Still not seen Ef. I think I might save it for my upcoming 20 hour flight to Taiwan

The episode was rather good, especially ummm when "that girl on the right" (forgot her name :() discovers/realises the feelings between Kazehaya and Sawako and the way she uses that particular scene to "taunt him" :D. Also i thought it gave slightly more insight into Ryu's character since we don't seem to know much about him and he's generally rather silent.

It wasn't bad, although i don't feel like they explained exactly how Misaka "won" the fight... i mean i get that something happened which caused the opponent to realise they would have lost if it were for "that thing that Misaka kicks" (metal fence which acted as a lightning rod or something?), but surely since they wanted information from her they would have arrested her?

Also, i'm not liking where it's going with the whole Level Upper and Saten ¬.¬

As for the timeline, originally i thought/head it was before No Index, however it seems like it currently runs parallel after Touma meets Misaka but before he helps her out with the clones etc. Although me and my flatmate found it rather strange how they seemed to change how Touma and Misaka met... (at a diner in No Index, and in a street in No Railgun)

Haven't watched the latest episode yet since me and my flatmate both enjoy it but have been preoccupied with other things such as work (in my case) or Dragon Age: Origins (in his case). Will probably get round to watching it tonight :D

I think i'm not going to comment on this :P

That could be good :o, although it might look strange if you get all emotional on the flight :P. Not to mention i always get headaches from watching stuff on flights and just tend to sleep for the majority of the journey regardless of the time.

---

As for my current viewings, not much has changed and i've lagged behind Darker than Black by about 5 episodes now due to work or various other issues... did however watch the OVA of Shakugan no Shana which is building up to the 3rd Season :D, am surprised you haven't watched even the first season yet JJ (according you your anime list) since it's supposed to be such a... "modern classic"?

Also currently am looking for a complete series to watch since i get sort of "fed up" of having to wait for a new episode every week, am currently looking at Air and Kanon, both of which are made by Kyoto Animation, people who made Haruhi, Lucky Star and Clannad. Especially since the latter was supposed to be the spiritual successor to both of them. Just have to wait a while since i seem to have already gone over my download limit.... teaches me to keep watching HD stuff on iPlayer, Dr Who, Life etc. :(.

I think they're both on my "to watch" list. I have very high hopes for Kanon especially, it's one of those I can't quite understand how I missed it.

OK, I'm now going to confess. I'm watching Kampfer and I love it

Enma Ai reference was quite Satanic:

Image

And, er, I do like a girl who knows what she wants:

Image

Next week is looking like a tropical bikini episode. How droll

Railgun was cool this week. Some plot development, and annoying loli was very angry. Which was good.
