It's a curiousity thing, and that's why blokes are the ones who come up with useful ideas, machines etc in the main, so there

Fair enough Caz, I don't mind leaving them to it, just hoping I wasn't so dense that I'd missed something obvious Ernie: I have plenty of curiosity, just not about things that can't be properly compared. To me, this experiment it the techy equivalent of taking a bite out of an apple, and then a bite out of an orange, and trying to determine which tastes more like a banana.

Well, that was asking for it. About a minute in Wikipedia came back with five female inventors, including one who patented the windscreen wiper in the 1900s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandy_Habermanhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Curiehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Anderson_(inventor) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bette_Nesmith_Grahamhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_CumminsBlokes don't have the monopoly on being clever, I think it's fair to say.

Have you never had to know how something worked out, even if there's little real reason for doing so?

Not since I was about 10 Besides, this experiment doesn't seem to be anything to do with how things work, more about which thing does it's job faster and then trying to compare them to each other!

No monopoly on cleverness either stated or implied. What was stated was a greater tendency towards curiosity.

Perhaps because, historically, they've had the time and inclination. I think it might be fair to state that for much of homo sapiens' evolutionary time, the females have played the role of homemaker. That doesn't necessarily leave a lot of time to be curious.

Its a laughable role-reversal of the Douglas Adams original!

Neither time nor inclination. At the end of the day I'm just happy that everything works, I don't care how because if things go wrong (and I therefore have to find out) it means I'm not doing something else I should be doing. I should add that in my case this only applies to all things techy, I'm more than happy fiddling about with cars, tinkering with power tools etc, although it's more repair than investigation as such! Before this turns into a gender-debate (of a certain size ) I think both sexes have contributed in massive ways to the development of the human race, and I don't claim one sex to (as a whole) be better than any other!

Too late it already has turned in to a gender debate. For the record I too have been found below the bonnet of a car when I was short of cash and needed it fixing. Funnily enough when I asked for the time off from work to do the tinkering it was the FEMALE boss who told me what to do. When I'd pulled out all the spark plugs and all the male neighbours were putting their 2 pennies in telling me what to do it was ultimately me that fixed it by trial and error. The conclusion is females are more than capable and very willing to take on boy stuff when it is necessary. We just don't waste time doing things for no particular reason other than 'need to know'.

Mis-quote for the slightly inappropriate and possible offensive draw, (not really a win, eh?)
