And what stops someone else using the facebook account and typing it in for him? He could have easily given someone the password to give him an alibi.
What a complete load of $hite!

Yep, easy to fake... I can see lots of people using it in the future. You have me on security camera? No way! I was 2,000 miles away updating my Facebook account!

It would surprise me quite a lot of Facebook didn't keep a log of the IP addresss users log in from. It would be quite straightforward to show whether it was a machine he could actually have logged in from or someone else doing him a favour. Jon

They state which machine it was, and he had access to it, and there seemed to be other evidence pointing to him being there anyhoo. But still...

All he's got to do to get off is present a reasonable doubt. He doesn't have to prove his innocence, but rather the prosecution would have to prove that he did it beyond all reasonable doubt.
The Facebook status update does exactly that - introduces doubt.

Exactly right. Furthermore I have to question the quality of the investigation if, not only did witnesses place him there but it's taken 12 days to check whether he was on Facebook or not. Exactly what evidence did they have that placed him at the scene and requires his being kept in jail for 12 days?
