Hoping 'Avatar' is the new face of filmmaking

Thought that was an interesting article since it looked at the whole Avatar project overall - question is, will you be going to see it?

I don't think I will somehow, as I have doubts about my ability to sit through a CGI-fest, never mind one that requires 3D glasses to get the full experience... That's a maybe from me, and re-voting is allowed

I'm kinda worried that it will do well, as that'll almost certainly mean a rush to 'CGI the actors' for the sake of it. Shows like this can struggle with a plot

Anyway, sorry about the rambling, what's your take on where things are going or just what you've seen of Avatar so far?

The new Waterworld.

I've never saw that film the whole way through - probably never will

I think Avatar may be able to make enough money from the cost of 3D screenings, their financing deals etc to make it worthwhile for the studio

I'm looking forward to seeing Avatar but am avoiding seeing any more previews from now until then. I know someone who's working at Weta Digital over in New Zealand and he says Avatar is a big step forward in film-making. I don't think Avatar will damage other films as everything seems to be a CGI-fest anyway (2012, etc) and I am bloody sick of superhero films so it will be refreshing to see something different and hopefully above comic book/game level for a change. One will have to trust that James Cameron knows what he's doing.

I am more wary of upcoming films like TinTin and The Hobbit.....why bother? Yes, I know there are very very few original ideas in Hollywood (apart from perhaps Pixar), but I'm hoping that if Avatar is a bit different then it might inspire someone to make a film that isn't formulaic.

I don't think they could have made the trailer any more irritating and bland if they had tried, it's like all the Final Fantasy FMV sequences since Final Fantasy 7 rolled into one, and we all know how well The Spirits Within did.

I liked Waterworld. Quite liked The Spirits Within too. Not many other people can say that!

I like Waterworld, in fact I've seen it a few times (on telly) but I'm prediciting it will bomb at the US cinemas and have a lukewarm reception overseas, at least I hope it does otherwise, OMG can you imagine how annoying films are going to become?

Well, it won't matter to you I 'spose, but if Avatar paves the way (and cheap enough), you can expect a lot more superhero films with multi-star CGI casts as a result



I know what you mean, but if Avatar is as cohesive as it's 'sposed to be, future films like TinTin could be the short term future at the very least...



No, it's just there's a few reasons I give up on films:

I often realise I'm about to waste two hours and quit (actually wish I'd done that with Titanic )

The ads become so annoying when they're on TV that I find I'm expecting them rather than getting engrossed in the film.

The bloody phone goes or someone calls

I've often seem bits of films at my uncle's house over the years, but he's got kids running about and you can never take it in.

It's been a really bad copy

It's been a rental disc that's been handled by a fcuktard

Was that the Final Fantasy movie that actually dared have a dying character say something like 'Leave me a gun, go on without me, I'll only slow you down'?
That was dreadful.

You remember something from that film? You have a better memory than I Although I remember the few scary moments when one of them looked uncannily like Donald Sutherland.

True. I rarely bother or tape them so I can speed through the ads. Jaws was on one of the ITV channels not too long ago and they cut a bit out of the ending just so they could get the full quota of ads in.



Happens a lot, doesn't it? What on earth do some dimwits do with the discs? The only way round this at my local Blockbusters is to rent subtitled films as most of the customers find it difficult to watch a film and read at the same time.
