My Dad is the H&S guy for the department I work in, and he told me that the chair isn't correct before I started having the aching. The problem is that at a few hundered quid a chair, the department can't/won't afford to replace the chairs the company have provided...

It is how I make my living. CK has a degree in muscular skeletal medicine. I work for her only having studied it for about two years (have been in private practice for 10). The causes are multiple and the diagnosis can be tricky. Treatments vary and different approaches suit different people.

General advice would be

If you know your chair is poor, replace it.

If know your bed causes you problems, change it.

If you are not getting enough sleep, change your schedule so that you can get more.

IF your self diagnosis of the cause is correct then you will get better. Better to treat cause rather than symptom.

Having said that, it is amazing how many people suffer because of lack of exercise, poor hydration, too much alcohol, and stress. If you are ever in my neck of the woods, give us a call.

Thanks CC. Problems such as my bed and my chair I can't really do much about for the time being, I could go to bed a bit earlier, though I'd end up having no evening if I went to bed much earlier...

Lack of exercise and lots of stress ring a bell. I'm hardly exercising at the moment (and I'm carrying a bit more weight that I really should be I think) and work is making me very stressed at the moment (see just about any of my threads asking for help in the PC Software forums! :P)
I tend not to drink much alcohol, having drank about four pints over the weekend, that's pretty high for me generally, and I'm generally very well hydrated.

Thanks for all the comments. I'm on the hunt for an affordable computer chair that should make sitting more comfortable for my dissertation, I've got a month left where I am, so by the end of that I'll be in a bigger bed and the lack of working here with this system should calm me down somewhat.

Hmm, tricky. They do realise that not fixing the problem could cost them thousands of pounds in legal fees and damages if you wanted to get particularly beligerant about it? Furthermore, if your Dad, in his H&S mode, makes management aware then the buck stops with them, as in the HSE will come down on them like a ton of bricks for neglecting employee health if they are made aware.

That's about my response as well, I'm the DSE Assessor for our company and according to HSE regulations your company have to provide you with the equipment you need to do your job without stress or strain. If the chair is bad and the bed is exacerbating the problem then they will have a cause to fight any complaints you make, but if they don't provide you with a new chair and yours is at fault, it will be far more costly in the future and they could be fined by the HSE as well.

Seeing as my back was buggered prior to this (it has hurt a lot in the past, I know I don't sit properly), I'm not sure what can be done. I did ask about a chair (to my boss not my Dad) and they suggested it could take four weeks to get a chair measured up, approved for purchase and then be ordered. I'm only there for another three weeks...

I am, however, looking at a chair for next year and have contacted a number of people about chairs.

A place in Chippenham called Woods, they are really more geared up for batch orders in offices, since I only wanted the one they offered me a 45% discount :D

I went into hospital with back pain this week - turned out to be kidney stones. Quite possibly the most pain I have ever been in (yes, more painful than breaking bones - done that a few times now), but the treatment was paracetamol, some pills to relax my tubes and the occasional tramadol for when it gets really bad.

Any reason why you didn't get a NSAID? Diclofenac, in studies, has been more effective for pain relief than morphine, especially if given rectally. Thankfully have never had kidney stones (because of the pain, it can get really bad at times).

Anyway, I have on odd occasions suffered from back pain but these days I try to be more conscious of my posture.

I was given Diclofenac, although I opted for the oral delivery - the nurse wasn't particularly attractive and I'd already had some doctor's hand up there the previous day and didn't want anything heading the wrong way up that street again. I didn't find the diclofenac all that helpful, if I'm honest. It took a while to have any effect and just wasn't as good as the paracetamol.

NSAIDs are nasty, I'm allergic to those. :(

Whilst recovering from an apendectomy, I found out that I'm allergic to morphine. The first sign was stopping breathing

Given rectally, the diclofenac is absorbed in a greater quantity and far faster than taken orally and much better than opiates which can cause spasms of the ureter (tube from kidney to bladder and is the place where stones form!).
