Seems to me that they gave the soldiers in Iraq what they needed (like the all knowing British public wanted them to), and now rather than giving them the old vehicles, inferior for this new mission in Afghanistan, they have given them new ones...
Different mission with a different set of requirements? Different equipment needed then surely?

Well said sir.

The Bulldogs were equipped for Iraq and aren't suitable for Afghanistan. Simples.

There is only one tank needed, and it has to be driven by the right person.

As many times as BAE (or a subsidiary) has handed out bribes, and they'll continue to do so.

mmm, Lori Petty

Erm, where was I?

Oh yeah, as Forquare said, diffent location, different requirements. The vehicles were uprgaded for their operational environment.

You wouldn't use them at the North Pole either, and you wouldn't use the artic tracked vehicles in the desert.

It is annoying, that having been upgraded, they aren't currently needed, because of operational changes since the decision to refit them, but it isn't as if upgrading them made them unsuitable for rocky terrain... If the upgrade had made them useless in Iraq as well, then it would have been a cock-up.

It of course helps if you post the original article as intended, instead of rushing things in work when you should be, er, working  :

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/p ... 927719.ece

Quote:
A defence source described the procurement, at a time when equipment shortages for troops have caused public anger, as a waste of money. “We certainly don’t need 900 of these things for training. It seems crazy to do this upgrade work on vehicles that are more than 40 years old and then put them into storage, which is what will happen to most of them,” he said.

It's the numbers I can't get my head around - 900 of the buggers and over 40 years old  :?

But like that second article says again, they weren't upgraded for Afghanistan, they were upgraded for Iraq...
One would presume it was cheaper to upgrade than buy again...

It still doesn't make much sense in terms of numbers though :?
