I think he's right, physical media is pretty much redundant now, no matter how many times sony wants to reinvent dvd.

Doubt it very much. Just because a new way of getting the content comes along doesn't not mean that the old one will die.
I never download games unless they're free, I like to own something that I pay for.

In the timeframe he is talking about, we probably will see a shift to on-line consoles.
Just because there isn't physical media, doesn't mean you can't install the game locally. As well as streamed content, you will probably also be able to buy games for installation on the local device.
It sounds like the Steam model moving to consoles.
It also makes it much easier for the developers, if there is a bug fix or a problem, they can roll it out to their servers and all players instantly get the updated version, when they purchase. No more buying a CD in a shop, installing and patching, just start playing the fully patched version live.
Apart from Spider Solitaire, I don't think I've played a locally installed game in over 2 years.

I think its a generational thing When CD’s 1st came along lots of people said they were convenient but they would keep buying LP’s. Now my Niece and Nephews have no idea what an LP is The same is now happening to music – download rather than buy a CD and then rip This will happen with consoles as well. As they are all connected to the internet its easier to download and play. So long as there is a system that lets you re-download if the consol breaks and you replace it then its not as issue to the average player The big issues is what happens when a consol is no longer produced and the manufactures switch off the servers – you suddenly cannot play games

A BluRAy disk holds a shed load of data. I suspect that there would be an initial hit for the download, and each “level” gets added to the system as the game is played. OK, sounds like a plan. But:
1 - Network issues caused my Little Big Planet upgrade ages to download. Dunno why, but the wait was painfully long. I didn’t have an option either.
2 - Eventually, the game will be put into some kind of “dormancy” or the company making them will shut down. Suddenly, any bits of the game you have not downloaded become unavailable. The control of availability of the game falls with the publisher, not you.
3 - Second hand games. I’m a real cheapo at times and will happily buy a second hand game. Sony et al probably don’t like it that Game or HMV are reselling the game with no money going to them. Tough. Make better games. There has to be a reason why the second hand shelves are full of one or two titles.

+1 to all that, not to mention associated hard disk failures, bandwidth, download allowances etc

My PS3 is more like a computer than a console. I can’t just shove a game in and go like I could with a MegaDrive, or even the PS2. Now I can do chat, watching videos, etc.. Nothing wrong with that, but it makes me think of it as a computer and not a games console. The problem with that is that I feel I have to treat it like a computer. I have to back up the hard drive in case of failure. It’s on the network, and so exposed (does it even have a firewall?). Stuff like that.

I know what you mean, it's a weird feeling isn't it? Things like iPlayer, updates, background downloads, browser... All that's why I ordered that sliding remote thing

With a true online experience your console would be a terminal with all the loading & processing done by a server in the cloud.
