I've got itchy feet - had my QX9650 for 12 months now and wondered if it's worth changing to the new i7 - either the 920 and overclock it or the 965.

I use current setup for work, games and film/music editing.

Yes/No?

If you have the money to burn go for it
Otherwise hold out until you actually need it.

Well, if you're thinking gaming then no, it's not worth it.

That's not just my opinion that's nVidias clicky.

If you have money to burn the, sure, go ahead.

Agree with the "only if you have money to burn" comment. In terms of pure gaming performance and using my system as an example I would be better to spend £300 on an extra 2GB RAM and a GTX275 and keep my current mobo and CPU. They'd even be money left over for a game or two!

Similar situation with me.
I'm waiting for the new chips to come out, then wait for the price drop.
I don't actually need more than 4GHz (could do most things on the eeepc) but just want something shiny

I'd say it's not worth the outlay. Motherboards etc are very expensive even if you go for the cheaper i7 920.

I agree with everyone above, you may have better things in your rig to spend money on - your processor isn't bad at all.

Why not post the specs of your whole rig and we'll comment on the best thing(s) to upgrade?

Depends if it’s an air brick or not, I suppose.

Is there something wrong with it, or is it just a case of combustible money and a pocket? I was going to do the same thing, but then I decided that what I've got now is perfectly good enough so why waste hundreds on something that might be marginally faster.

I'm still yet to find a game that needs more than my Q6600!

But why spend over a grand on something you don't really need? I have a lowly E6600 but it runs everything I have without problems, so what is the point (apart from bragging rights)?

The I7 mobos seem really expensive to me, was it like this when the Core 2 Duos initially showed up? :?
