Google CEO hides behind the 'if you've got something you don't want us to see, it must be because you're doing something naughty' defence when asked about his companies data tracking/hoarding practices.

I give it six months before we get to the "it's to protect The Children" line.

The good news is that people are starting to see through the whole "Do no evil" smokescreen and realise that Google is just another advertising company that runs internet search as a sideline.
Google's frantic attempts to invade and then "own" every corner of cyberspace and beyond is actually quite funny. Their forays are almost invariably short-lived failures, either through poor design and implementation and\or they provide no opportunity for profit! Of course they have had some brilliant successes too, but only in areas that benefit Google in the long-term. That's fair enough they're a business, but I do get irritated by the uncritical "gee whizzery" of the IT press every time Google farts out some bit of code.

Much of their effort at present (Chrome O/S for instance) seems aimed solely at extending their advertising hegemony (YeeeHa!) through ensuring that everything a punter does is filtered through (and by) the Googopoly. As someone else has pointed-out I rather doubt that any of Google's senoir execs are subjected to the sort of scrutiny that they want to apply to we ordinary insect-people with their intrusive monitoring and data-collection.

There was a brilliant comment on the El Reg article for this, and it went something like:

"When Google said "Do No Evil" they meant you!"
