Hi guys,

My iPod is becoming noticeably deader.

When playing songs if I then scroll through coverflow it slows down the songs (almost like they're not being buffered properly).

Could this be a sign that the HDD is on its way out?

If so, can you replace them?

Can you put SSDs in them?

It'd be very nice to stick a 32GB SSD in instead of a HDD.

You can put a CF card in a mini.

Have you tried restoring the software?

Yeah, did that a few weeks ago.

This is a 160GB iPod Classic (the first gen called the Classic not the current 160GB Classic).

I had one of those. They use a 1.8" HDD wit ha zif connector. Not sure if SSD's go that slow.

Genius!

I played it until the battery went and the iPod turned off.

Then charged it up overnight.

It now no longer stutters when playing music!

BONUS!

Considering my iPod Photo is still going, I’d be surprised if a new one had died so readily. Mind you, mine is starting to show signs of age.

I have an old iPod 4G I still use most weekdays (connected up to my car stereo). I came across the original invoice for it a couple of weeks ago - I bought it in April 2004.

Mine is still fine though it is almost redundant now that I have a 5G 160 Gb Classic.
