Anybody know of a quick way to calculate the amount of surface area for a room?
I need the floor - easy, done.
The walls - not so easy, we have eaves in each room, which takes away some space, plus doors and windows. The doors and windows are relatively easy, but the eaves are causing me headaches.
The eaves themselves are relatively easy, I have their width and height.
The ceiling.
The rooms are 2,49M high, the eaves start at 1,20M from the floor, but I don't have the exact angle.
Calculating the walls where there is no eave is easy, calculating the wall on the eave is easy. Calculating the two side walls, which have the eaves is causing me problems...
Without the angle of the eave, I can't see an easy way to accurately calculate the surface area.

For why do you need the surface area of the walls? Are you after the total volume of the room (for example to calculate the amount of heating required), or just the surface area (for example so you can paint it)?

We want to lay cork on the floor and paper and paint the walls and ceiling.

I would buy enought to cover two side walls complete then you have enough for accidents and mishaps.

Thanks lacloss, that is the conclusion I just came to, after talking to my girlfriend.

Aye, it's probably one of the first DIY lessons I learned - never think you have enough to get the job done.

Buy some 1cm square graph paper and glue it to the walls and then count the squares?

Do you really think that is practical? He needs the 1mm squares, much more accurate result

Of course, first he'd need to calculate the area to ensure he bought enough graph paper to cover it

Isn't this what tape measures and maths are for?

I don't have access to the house at the moment, we've bought it, but don't start renovating until 1st January. My girlfriend and her brother measured it all last time they looked at the house - hence I have all of the measurements, as said above - but they didn't measure the angle of the eaves. From my understanding of the maths, I need that angle to calculate it accurately.

I find it hard to believe someone would go through such trouble to work out the surface area of their house's walls in order to paint it!
Just work it out very approximately and over estimate everything.
Any tubs of paint you don't use can be taken back to the shop at the end of the painting session.
