I havent got a fairy/star for the top of mine. I had a lovely modern looking star made out of twisted metal but its too heavy and leans.

I put the tree up over the weekend but it's up to Mrs. V and the kids to decorate it.

Due to illness/birthdays this hasn't been done yet, but I'm sure they'll get it done in the next day or so...

There's a plant nursery type place near us that has very reasonable prices and they have all the trees laid out in rows, with different areas containing different types of tree. You pick the one you want and take it to a bloke who wraps it up and then take it home. Struggling to fit the damn thing in the girlfriend's tiny 2-seater is optional.

The trouble is, outside it looks smaller (and much narrower in spread) than when it's inside and taking over the entire living room. I may have to get more lights :)

Try Homebase.

We found one at B&Q but it had a fair old trunk on it and they wouldn't trim the damn thing. We popped to Homebase and they offered without asking, were cheaper, and it looks very healthy even after a 2 weeks.

How blood hard it it to get a tree? I wanted a five foot spruce. Nearly everywhere has sold out of spruce and only hard Norman fir lest, and those that did have spruce only had ones over six foot tall.
I didn't want to buy early as I wanted to be sure the tree lasted over Christmas. How hard can it be to sell small trees? It's not as if there aren't lots of small ones out there waiting to be cut down. I think it's a ploy to make you pay more.

The fir lasts much longer than the spruce so it is something you can buy early without having to worry too much about needle drop. It is somewhat more expensive, but is fairly comparable when you consider cost / time.

I don't want fir. Spruce is traditional for me.

I wouldn't worry about that as at most places they're all cut at once, then just sit there 'til they're sold. I'm lucky I've got a mate that grows Christmas trees, so I get whatever size I want freshly cut for a tenner. This year I only paid eight quid as it was only 6'.
