My brother's just come back from Uni with a new laptop after the last one was stolen. I can't remember my parents' wireless router password and for some reason their netgear router shows the password as stars whereas mine shows the password in letters.

Anyway, on my mac, I'd use the keychain utility to find out what password it was using when it connects automatically at startup. However, the mac at home is not wireless, so I can't do that.

Can I do a similar thing on Windows? My Mum's laptop logs in automatically on startup, so is there way of finding out what password it's using? It would be useful there is a way.

Failing that, I guess I can change the password on the router, but that involves changing it on all the machines that are set up to use the router, so I'd rather not.

Is it Vista/Windows 7?

If memory serves correct you can copy the settings to a USB stick and transfer them to a new pc :)

It's XP, but Alun's hack seems to have done the trick. Would be useful to know for the future though if anybody knows.

Crap, I could do with finding out what ours is. Our ISP did a router update and messed up the login so I can't remember what it is... :?

Ah, not a netgear. Nevermind, I'll no doubt just reset it all as I've just built the GF a PC for downstairs and this lappy will be stripped and possibly penguinified. It wouldn't have been a problem but the broadband is in the GFs name and she just ignored and deleted any contact she had about it. :D

No doubt there was some information there about the effects of the "upgrade".
