Thinking about it, I can't see it selling too many physical copies, as isn't HMV about the only place you can buy CD singles these days? And when did a lot of people last buy any kind of CD single? :?

And if the one in Belfast city centre is anything to go by, music in general isn't as much of a priority as games and DVDs :)

I agree that people don't buy singles anymore but the Xfactor is different to anything else. Kids will buy it just because it is "cool". Xfactor in previous years sold 275k to 700k singles depending on the year.

Until this morning RATM sold only 90k according to facebook source which is not exactly "stellar" considering 800k people in the group. But it may be that people just procrastinate the purchase, I only bough mine yesterday and I am going to buy another two later this week.

Or, more likely, people like the idea but don't want to waste their money on it.

D'ya ever get the feeling some people take things too seriously?
Dress it up however you like, for some of us it's just amusing to put a sweary rock song at number one instead of one of Cowell's mass produced pop songs.
For me, attempting to reach some further meaning about 'the music business' or 'popular tastes' and your representation is completely pointless in the present time. We have the internet, we don't rely on the radio anymore to find new tunes. So how relevant is the chart anyway to any of us? Unless you're in the business, it's a passing frippery. It's willy waving for the labels and that's about it.

Ok, scratch that, I got it wrong:

So 175k in three days, that is pretty good :D

BBC Airs F-Word Song At Breakfast Time

http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Showbi ... 2516?f=rss

Quote:
The BBC faces embarrassment after an expletive-laden song was broadcast to more than two million morning radio listeners.

A live performance of Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name was aired on Radio 5live Breakfast shortly before 9am.

The alt-rock band had chatted to the show on the campaign to get the song to the Christmas number one spot.

The group were then invited to perform the 1992 hit - which is rivalling X Factor winner Joe McElderry for the festive top spot - live on air.

But minutes into the performance, lead singer Zach de la Rocha could be heard repeatedly screaming the song's refrain: "F*** you, I won't do what you tell me".

The song was eventually interrupted by desperate host Shelagh Fogarty shouting: "Get rid of it".

She then explained: "Sorry. We needed to get rid of that because it suddenly turned into something we weren't expecting.

"Well, we were expecting it, and had asked them not to do it, but they did it anyway, so buy Joe's record."

Stuttering co-host Nicky Campbell later admitted being too "engaged" with the track.

A BBC spokesman later said: "5 live breakfast featured a live broadcast of the song Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine.

"We had spoken to the band repeatedly beforehand and they had agreed not to swear.

"When they did we faded the band out and apologised immediately to anyone who was offended."

The error occurred less than 24 hours after George Michael had uttered the f-word during Chris Evan's drivetime show on Radio 2.

Evans, who is soon to replace the retiring legend Terry Wogan in the station's breakfast slot, "sincerely apologised" to listeners for any offence the singer caused.

BBC radio shows have faced closer scrutiny following the well-publicised phone scandal involving Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand last year.

Many live programmes have been forced to prepare their output after a record number of complaints, despite the original lewd prank calls to Andrew Sachs being pre-recorded before airing in October 2008.

First time ever Nicky Campbell has ever made me laugh

1) They really should have been expecting it and if they were, why wasn't someone sat there with their finger on the 'fade' slider?
2) That last comment could very well be seen as the BBC endorsing a commercial product and will get them in if anything even more trouble than a sweary rock band.

Mmmm l wonder what the song is about.. could the chorus of "f*ck you I wont do what you tell me" have given them a clue about there attitude towards being told what to do.

More money than sense springs to mind.

Personally I don't care who's number 1. Stopped following the charts over 10 years ago :)

That's my reason for buying it in a nutshell.

Money? Is that what you call £1.50?
Are you sure your life is worth living if you can't spare 1.50 for a laugh? I hope I will never be that poor...

You can't say Zak hasn't try do it without swearing. Their songs have so much energy in them and they actually have a meaning and a message. You gotta get carried away while performing the song like that...

*waits for Levick to say it is a waste of money
