Absolutely.

My parents introduced me to alcohol when I was quite young, via wine & water with dinner. Not very often because they only had it a few times a year, but if they had wine then so would I from the age of maybe 9 or 10.

I was a very responsible drinker when I was 10. I rarely had more than 1 or 2 units a week, even at this time of year. I most certainly never drunk-drove.

By the time I was 15 I'd evolved into the binge-drinking alcoholic that I am today. It had absolutely nothing to do with drinking at home, and everything to do with wanting to escape from the tedium and unpleasantness of society by getting completely senseless. Everything is so much more fun when you're off your face.

I think that is a difference. If I want to escape society, I go out for a walk in the countryside or listen to music or watch a film. Alcohol was never an escape for me...
