Get some fluffy slippers.
Animals shouldn't be in the house.
Simples.

Get another one, I think they are great. Even if mine is a hissing, spitting, flat-headed, yellow-eyed maniac. (c) Terry Pratchett

PIE!
I loved Kerry, had her for 18 years, before we had to put her down. But after we all started working, it wasn't really fair. We got rid of the dog when we started working, because he could wait at home all day, so we found a shelty lover who gave him a new home.
Kerry looked after herself. We used to leave a downstairs fanlight open for her and she could climb in or out as she pleased - until she had a stroke. It was great having her, but I wouldn't get another cat. I like cats, but I just don't want one.
Tina is a dog lover and Jack is brilliant - although he bit me this afternoon, as we were out walking! (He loves the snow and got a bit over enthusiastic and started jumping up at me, as I pushed him away, he nipped at my hand, luckily I was wearing gloves.)
If I was alone, I wouldn't have a dog, because I couldn't look after him during the day, but luckily Tina does shift work in the kitchens and the girls can take him for a walk, when she has to work longer...

Not being a huge fan of cats generally I'm loathe to suggest letting their numbers increase but it doesn't sound like a dog is for you either so a cat or two it is. They are much more independent than dogs (to the point of belligerence IMHO) so should suit you situation perfectly. Just don't expect a direct replacement and you probably won't be disappointed.

Tell my cat that, she only goes out for about 15 minutes a day.

I will not be dying my pussy It would be adopted from a rescue home. There are plenty of pre-loved pussies out there, and I'm not that fussed about where it's been. Thank you everyone for your input. I'll probably start looking in the new year, and I'm sure there will be plenty of pictures

Cat or a Spaniel. Either is good.

I like Spaniels. Spaniels, Great Danes, German Shepherds, Dalmatians and Collies (farming ones, not Lassie ones ). We have a cat though, it wouldn't feel right having a dog in this house, too small IMO.

The whole beauty of a cat is that they can look after themselves unlike dogs that “need” companionship.
We have a cat and they have a cat flap to get into / out of the garden although at this time of the year they spend most of the time in front of the Radiator!
If we go away for a weekend then they just get a lot more food put down and its up to them not to scoff it all on day 1
If we are away for our hols then we either use friends of we have a cat sitting service – they charge £6 / day and will call in, feed the cats, and even water the plants

Definitely. You can leave them for a weekend with food and water and the worst they will do is sleep. Plus, I like the fact that their moody little buggers.
