True, if you can't be happy without money you'll never be happy with money. That said, money can alleviate some worries so that those that can be happy already can be happier still...

+1 for all these. I think Xmas ads, decorations etc should not be allowed up until 1st Dec. I had a rant about this when I saw some advert in October about Xmas! Also January sales should not be allowed to start until 2nd Jan, and Boxing Day should be another relaxing day instead of a mad rush to the shops.

So... presumably there's some magic time when it becomes acceptable to 'begin' Christmas then? When is it? I'd vote for the 24th of December. Except when it's not. It's also Hannukah for the Jews 12th to the 19th, Al-Hijira and Ashura on the 18th and 27th for the Muslims, Yule for the Pagans on the 21st, and the Buddhists get the 9th to celebrate Bodhi. The term Winterval was used as a promotional device to get the people into the shops, it had nothing to do with any religious convictions. I'm all for that, as I'm working both Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.

And so all those who are at work on the 27th and the 2nd will miss out on the sales. You want them all too yourself don't you, you bugger you! Mind you, I can't remember the last time I fought through a crowd in a sale, that is one of the beauties of the t'interweb as you don't have to be in the company of the flu ridden masses.

I'd say 21st. It's the winter solstice, after all, and the festival that has been usurped by those pesky Christians. By all means, leave decos up until Twelfth Night (6th January), but frankly, putting decos up in November means they all look tired and worn out by Christmas. Forcing people to be merry and festive so early in the year just doesn't work any more, so leave it until later and the magic might come back.

That's a good compromise. I say compromise as I had this conversation with my GF. In Finland they don't buy trees until the 24th, have their meal on the 24th and open their presents on the 24th, it's the other extreme. Although my GF still wants to do the meal/presents on Christmas Eve as, for a change, we're in the UK she does prefer having the tree in the house much earlier. The Winter Solstice seems like a good time.
