That is the problem. It is running very slow, but the box says 802.11n it is supposedly made by Belkin but at less than a tenner it could easily be a Blekin (sic) copy from China.

I'd put money on the wireless adapter on the PC not being draft n... probably draft b
Tried a wired connection?

You think?

It is a recent (maybe 12 months old lappy which cam with Vista on it). The "n" protocol has been standard now in Apple land since Jan 2007.

Is there as simple way to check?

As to wired I don't know if he has tried. I will have to ask him.

No. From the number of different ways that people have said you can check there are quite a few ways to check.

Check what the connection speed is (mouse over the wireless bit in Vista).
Log onto the web interface of the router (normally 192.168.1.1) and check the wireless settings.
Find the model number of the router (from the router itself) and google it for specs.

Google the wireless card that he has in his PC (or the PC model number if it is a Dell or something).

That way you'll find if the PC is b, g or n. it'll prob be b/g which should still give 54Mbps connection.

Thanks for the reply, I will pass on what you have said. I doubt that it will make sense to him though as he seems to know less about PCs that I do and I know diddly squat.

For example I don't know what you mean by "wireless bit in Vista" or how to log into an IP address (if that is what those numbers mean) or how to find the model number if it really is a Chinese copy of a Belkin as I suspect.

The computer is an Acer lappy I think, I have not seen it yet, will the model number be anywhere obvious?
