OK, it's a Sun article but this quote got me thinking:

Quote:
The source added: "When you think of their crimes and the misery they have caused, you have to ask if it's right for society to pay to entertain them.

Now being a Sun article, the 'source' probably said no such thing, but it's a good question, isn't it?

My initial thoughts are give them the basics and whatever their rights allow and let that be it, but what do you reckon? I'm not quite buying the exercise bit either ;)

Big can of worms, very big. So I'm not going to start ranting and raving.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

They should get tatty old books and board games that charity shops can't sell. Nothing more. No TV, no consoles, no internet or phones etc.
Prison is far too soft and hotel like these days. It's no deterrent at all.

You need to change the hotels you're staying in then.

I think stale bread and water should be enough, along with some iron bars and concrete walls. If you run out of cells, double up, and again and again until you cannot physically push another body into the cell.

Unfortunately, something called human rights has stopped us adequately punishing such people...

Well that's rather barbaric and inhumane.

Safe, warm, suitable accommodation and some light entertainment isn't too much to ask I don't think. Playstations et al is probably going too far, but I wouldn't deny someone phone calls, or a chance to work out/play pool/read/study etc. After all these people are locked inside for years, if you don't give them something to do they're going to riot.

Obviously with it being hollywood I don't know if it is true or not, but the fact that many cons in the US seem to pump iron all day doesn't bode well for victims on their release. Perhaps if they were treated like veal their rehab rate would improve.

And that's when you make it tough for them, one way or another. If they don't get the message, make it tougher until they do. If it comes down to funding, well, we'll just have to stop buying them game systems and giving them Sky TV and the like. Right down to cheaper food than they're on already... This isn't a dig at you, just what I wouldn't mind seeing tested if it came to it ;)
