Almost every coat I have could easily carry all of that. :? Seriously it's not a lot of stuff. . . Failing that - a small bag?

I don't usually have a coat or bag with me. I do usually have my phone in my pocket, along with my key, credit card and a clean hanky. I don't want to carry more "stuff" than that. Coats and bags are a pain; easy to lose or leave behind which would be a double nightmare if they had everything in them.

If I drop or stand on or bang the piece of paper whilst banging in a fencepost or walking up a hill, chances are that it won't get too badly damaged. If I drop or stand on or bang a phone chances are it's shagged.

I wouldn't recommend it, but my phone has been dropped plenty of times and it seems pretty robust. I've broken far more pens, and at least a phone never leaks ink all over your only suit. As to banging in fence posts, I don't usually do it with the phone. Last time I used a JCB, but that's a different story.

I'm not a member of the cast of 24 nor a crack international assassin. I'm simply not ever going to be called to somewhere unknown without the chance to consult a map first.

It happens to me a lot, although less often in my current position. It's called "the second job of the day", and could be anywhere in the country.

I don't lug reading material around either. But neither do I "wait". I much prefer to explore and examine and hypothesise and test and wonder and question and see and touch and hear and smell ......

I usually seem to wait in small deserted reception areas with a piece of "art" on the wall, a plastic plant and a view of a brick wall. To be honest, it holds little interest for me.

But no-one needs to access it but me :?

And I shudder at the thought of someone being able to change my, repeat my diary when they choose to.

I use calendar to organise work and stuff like doctors appointments. When you work with people, they tend to need to know what you're doing and where you are. I can't see any use for a "secret schedule" unless you're a crack international assassin?

When you work in a location with zero reception (so that your phone battery dies in 90 minutes) in rain, mud and crap I find a simple £6 20gram wristwatch to be much less encumbering than a 4oz monolith banging against my leg.

Plus you can use any analogue wristwatch as a compass.

Plus you can't fit an iPhone into chainsaw trousers.

I couldn't work without a phone, so it's going to be there whether I like it or not. We clearly have very different jobs, although I'm pretty sure there's a chainsaw app for iPhone.

I've spent £3 on credit in 2 years - PAYG FTW!

My personal phone is a cheap indestructible brick. I think I've put £5 on it since I first got it about 8 years ago. It came with £2 which lasted the first couple of years, and I think there's about £3 left. I don't generally make personal phone calls; certainly not from a mobile. The last few calls have simply been to keep it alive, because you need to use it once or twice a year to avoid losing your credit.

Wristwatches are a pet hate of mine. I don't think jewellery looks good on men, and even the most utilitarian of time pieces is an unnecessary encumbrance. Before I had a phone, I did use one. They usually broke in a couple of years, or if I took them off to avoid breaking them - I'd lose them. Either way, completely pointless now I carry a phone.

When I was working at home, I didn't wear a watch, but now that I am commuting and running round all the time, I wear my watch again, a fairly plain Seiko titanium kinetic. It is about 10 years old and generally loses less than a minute a year.

Given that I have my watch with me more often than my 'phone, it is always there, easy to see and I don't have to turn on the display to see what time it is. A mobilephone is just too cumbersome to be a good replacement.

I'm also with Rusty when it comes to maps and GPS and navigation devices. My last 2 phones had Google Maps and I can get Navigon, TomTom or about half a dozen other navigation apps for my current phone. My car has a built in navigation system. I used Google Maps once on my old 'phone and haven't used it at all on the iPhone. I've had the Mondeo for about 4 years and I've probably used the navigation system a dozen times in anger - I sometimes punch in the destination, so I have a ready-reckoner for how long I still need to get there, but that is about it.

I rode all over Europe on my motorbike without a map or navigation system and I never got really lost. In Czech once, the main roads were closed due to flooding and I had to drive over some high hills over back roads. Because I had looked at a map before setting off, I knew roughly which direction I had to drive in and which towns to look out for. I made it to my destination without navigation with about a 30 minute delay, because I had to circumnavigate 60KM of close roads...
