I quite often have my thing out, even though it's not as cool as an iPhone. It's usually because I'm using it for serious business, checking it, playing with it, taking pictures or just bored.

Often I'm just fondling it idly to reassure myself it's still there.

So are boobs :)

And they are 'just there' not being used except possibly for music... but it's not like you can use wireless headphones with them either until recently (if at all)

Give me an option to get one with a hardware keyboard or I'm not interested.

Everyone I see that uses one in uni seems to always have it out on show.... is it because:
1. They scratch easier than iPods and cases cost as much as a Bugatti Veyron?
2. They are pricks trying to show how cool they are?
3. They are waiting for someone to call them so they can show off how to answer a phone with no dedicated send/receive buttons?
Perhaps it's not the people that use them that are trying to make a point, perhaps it's more to do with the people looking on in some sort of jealous longing wishing that if only someone made a hardware keyboard (for example) for it then they'd get one.

Maybe... but i'd rather take the Milestone or an HTC Droid over the iPhone any day for a variety of reasons, A2DP, hardware keyboard, removable battery, easier access to free apps (not having to use the marketplace if you don't want to), better screen resolution for video playback, ability to send files over bluetooth. The list really does go on.

It looks ok... but you don't look at your phone when you are making a call unless you are some bug eyed freak, or using bluetooth.... in which case freak :)

The Ford Sync software works with the iPhone (and Droid, and Windows Mobile), syncing music with the iPhone over A2DP... :?

I have a Touch Pro as well as the iPhone and I've used a few Android machines, and to be honest, even with the physical keyboard, I switched pretty quickly to using the onscreen keyboards... The biggest problem is having to go landscape to type anything. The iPhone interface is just better at that sort of thing, even without a physical keyboard option.

Given the number of banks and credit institutes that issued warnings in January about accounts being compromised by rogue Android apps, I prefer the iTunes store - I'm still not happy with the way Apple treats developers, by keeping much of the approval process concealed and not giving feedback on why apps fail, but from a user point of view, I'd prefer the tight controls of the iTunes App Store over the Android marketplace at the moment.

Can't comment on video quality, I only watch one video podcast and it is at a sub-iPhone resolution, so having a higher resolution screen wouldn't make any difference.

The partially crippled Bluetooth stack is an issue for some users. That said, I've never tried to send a file over Bluetooth on any of my 'phones...

Seems Firmware 3.0 gave A2DP.... only a few years later....

I found bluetooth incredibly useful, especially when I would forget the USB cable for my laptop and wanted to share my 3g connection on my phone or quickly send photos or files to a friend.

You can use an iPhone to tether, assuming you've paid for the privilege. This is a network restriction on O2 at least and not really anything to do with the phone. It may be different on other providers. I don't really see the need to bluetooth files around much - I don't tend to store any data files on my phone. Why would I when things like DropBox are free? Pretty much every time I need a file, I need to do something to it on a PC. That PC will almost certainly be networked. Files on phones is something I have never felt for the lack of. Pictures maybe, I have had to BT a picture to or from someone on occasion but I've had to do that <thinks> less than half a dozen times since I first had a bluetooth phone, which was an SE T68i that you had to buy an extra camera dongle for, which tells you how often that facility gets used.

I'm somewhat amused by the way people who don't have/use iphones complain about the things it doesn't have, some of which are bordering on the esoteric, while ignoring the things it does well that are the things you actually want to do with a phone pretty much every day. The bluetooth finagling does upset me occasionally but otherwise it's a device which does what 99% of people want it to do 99% of the time. And nobody, as far as I am aware, had made it illegal to own some other brand of phone should you wish to. If you wish to buy a phone that has exemplary Bluetooth functionality because that is what you need a phone to have, well, knock yourself out, there are plenty to choose from.

I had the Ericsson T68 (same phone before Sony and Ericsson merged).

I loved that phone! I even bought the camera thing for it too!

There are ways to tether without O2 saying so (as long as you're not silly with data).
With apps like airsharing you can wi-fi docs to your phone.

You can use an iPhone to tether, but I believe you have to use the cable to do so.

I'm on O2 and can tether my X1 fine by USB or bluetooth (including setting up a PAN over bluetooth for multiple devices), I don't need the additional charges on my account without the extra rubbish when I get it for free with my main data bolt on. The main benefit of bluetooth is I can keep my phone in my pocket etc and still access the internet on my laptop.

I don't really use it for photos, more work docs people have emailed me when I'm in uni to send to people on my course as most email access is blocked during lectures and it's quick and easy for small docs. That and I have Office Mobile so don't need to faff on with reading it in a funny way.

The 'storing' is the saving of email attachments when I choose. If I wanted to use dropbox I would likely use Mesh or something else instead as it supports mobile phones

No, not at all. I tether my iPhone to a netbook running windows 7 using bluetooth. It's more faff than a cable but it does work. In fact, when you switch tethering on, instructions for connecting via USB or bluetooth appear on the iPhone's screen.

With all due respect, can I suggest you do some more research about what the iPhone can/cannot do?

I had an original iPhone, I'm not doubting they are good bits of hardware, but having to wait through various features for significant usability features and the fact it's now on goodness knows how many revisions since release, I have no interest in keeping track of hardware I don't really have any intention on buying. As for research, actually searching only throws up old pages full of pretty pointless info.

I've had a Sony Ericsson C905 since it's release.

Since then it has had 6 or 7 firmware updates. That's less than 18 months ago.

The battery has been replaced twice, the battery life has only just been fixed to last over a day or two, the keyboard has broken twice.

I'm not going to assume from this that every Sony Ericsson that will ever be produced at any time in the future is going to be a pile of crap that I never want to use.

I find the best way to find out if something is good or not is to find out what it does, find out user feedback and try it yourself.

Eh? So after the first month of your contract?
