Personally I agree with Michael and the standards have slipped greatly. It would be nice to go back to the more tailored look but I can't see it happening. These days I only dress up for birthdays, Christmas, meals out and the very rare night out. My partner is stunned when I wear a skirt. I wore a posh dress and boots to work on Monday as I was meeting many colleagues from Europe and around the globe and I lost count of the amount of (pleasant) comments I had.

I'd have to agree.

It's not just clothing though. Designer stubble has given way to just not shaving, and I'm as guilty as the next person.

BTW, I too get a number of comments when I wear a posh dress and boots, weird.

Why do we have to be slobs just because we don't dress-up?
There's nothing wrong at all in being casually dressed.
I find it more distressing that you're agreeing with a Daily Mail article.

Maybe slobs is the wrong term. I'd say 90% of the nation dress very casually these days.

I have always admired the days of the 50s when people wore fabulous dresses, suits with gloves and hats and have always wanted to be around in that era....

After meeting with the Europeans this week it was explained to me how each nation dresses differently. Such as the French preferring black, Germans take great pride in their clothes and usually wear a jacket and the Spanish like bright colours and wear colourful wool in the winter and I must say I agree. What do the Brits do? City boys or sales people tend to dress up. The rest of us wear jeans if we can get away with it.

It's 12.30, I'm still in my dressing gown, and I'm not Hugh Hefner.
I'd say yes. ;)

I sort of agree, at one time people would dress up just to receive guests to their homes but I think times have changed too much. If all you have to do all day is embroider, then you can dress in a fabulous dress and sit straight-backed all day directing the staff and stitching your pretty tablecloths. Nowadays women and men both have very different attitudes to appearance. It's no longer an indication of your position in society, and I wouldn't be able to do my job day-to-day if I had to wear stays and a corset, let alone heels.

I don't think slobs is the right word, and there are still circles of society who do appearance "properly" but I really wouldn't want to be in that world all day everyday.

I don't think it matters what you wear to work/out on a daily basis as long as you can look presentable when it counts e.g. job interview/meeting/fancy meal out.

The appearance is still very important, I'm dreading getting a hair cut before I have to go to a job interview (last year of uni).

Dress appropriately. That's what I do and if it makes me a slob in other peoples eyes then so be it.

I must admit that I still put on a suit if I am going to a new clients for a meeting and I agree with you most of the people who see me ask if there is something special going on,
I dress to impress ,yes I admit it ,need the client's and it does make a nice change .
But it must be said here on the Costa in the summer shorts an a clean shirt are the order of the day .

OK another q for you. If you were doing a big presentation (70 odd people) would you make sure your shoes were 'presentable'?

Our new boss had dirt all over his shoes on Monday and when he sat down I noticed they were walking boots and not proper shoes at all. I was quite surprised.

I wear a shirt and trousers for work but the rest of the time I wear jeans and t-shirts but I wouldn't call that slobby. I find them more comfy. Some weekends I don't even bother getting dressed. Just stay in my PJ's
