Does anyone else think that the MacBook Air is going to be designated as End of Life in a couple of months time?

The lack of Flash and Java (is that still true?) means you have to buy special Apple shaped things instead of using normal free things that already exist. It's a way of increasing the iFleece revenue stream, and a model that only works with very loyal brands.

I'm still gob-smacked that Apple managed to get Google to totally redesign Youtube to get around the fault with Flash. Yes, people wanted Youtube's flash content on their iPhone - but rather than Apple make it work, they got other people to bend over and take the punishment? Not that I'm actually sad about that particular change - the mp4 streams play much better on my netbook than the processor mental Flash version ever did.

I think 2 months a little quick. I just don't think there will be a new version, and it will disappear in it's current form before Christmas.

But yes, it was very pretty and pretty pointless. I could have accepted it more as a "concept car" that never made it to market beyond a limited edition for the real fans.

Does anyone know anyone who has one? I mean, someone who's wife didn't accidentally throw it out with the old newspapers?

or a potential vast market who will put up with those limitations.
The potential worry here is the creeping lock-down. One company decides what you are allowed to have on your equipment. All entry is by approved channels, the "we know best" atitude.
But it will still sell by the bucket load so what do i know :D

Doubt it. It has a working keyboard and more ports for connectivity.

1. Why would it need to? The only thing I can think that I would like to multitask is playing music whilst browsing the internet. I don't know if that's possible but other than that I can't see any advantage in it. Especially given that it seems to be able to switch between non-running Apps so quickly. i.e. writing an email. Browse web to site that you wish to quote. Copy text. Go to email. Paste text. Go back to web which (if it's like the iphone) will still be at the page you left it at) copy, rinse, repeat...

I can't imagine watching a movie on half the screen and browsing the internet or playing a game on the other half would be any use on a 9.7 inch screen.

2. Flash I'm unsure about. There are rumours that the next iPhone will support Flash and AFAIK Android 2 will support Flash so I wouldn't be surprised.

3. Yeah, it's called the App Store.

4. Yes, but then Apple is a company out to make money and they are not ashamed of that fact. They even boast about their worth in the event.

The whole thing's a bit 'meh' IMO, and it sure isn't ''revolutionary''

It hasn't exactly set the internet alight going by the usual news outlets either... Yes, it was hyped beyond belief, but it just doesn't seem to have a core selling point or enough features to justify buying one - or am I missing something? :?

I tend to agree. It isn't everything is was hyped up to be.

It does what it does very well though. I think the netbook market is where it's aimed at and it does everything that the netbook market needs very well including light word processing etc...

I'm still waiting to see the UK price. Anything over £400 and it'll price itself out of the netbook market straight away.

Just comparing to £400 netbooks...

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167271

Netbook ------------ iPad
1.66 GHz Atom CPU --------- 1GHz Apple thingumy
WXGA screen --------- XGA screen
Wifi n --------- Wifi n
Bluetooth 2.1 --------- Bluetooth 2.1
1.5kg --------- 0.7kg
1734 cm^3 ---------- 600 cm ^3

Not really sure about graphics card for the iPad but it supports 720p video and seemed to deal well with the couple of examples of 3D gaming they showed at the event.

The battery life of 10 hours video playback is also a big plus for it also it's a hell of a lot smaller than the equivalent netbook.

Au contraire. It is exactly what it was hyped up to be. The predictions turned out to be almost 100% correct. And that's partly why people are underwhelmed by it - in effect they've seen it all before, even though they haven't.

I couldn't find a current product on the US apple online shop that cost $499 so there's no obvious predictor. There were a couple of things that cost $449 which were around $370 in the UK. I think it may very well cost £399 for the 8GB non-3G version. You might actually be able to get one of the bigger 3G-enabled ones cheaper than that if you take out a mobile data contract with it.

Smallest size is 16GB but I think you're correct.

Slightly impressed by the thing, but nothing I'd actually want to buy. Maybe when it gets to revision four or five and does something useful. ;)

It would make a good DCC train controller.
