In apparent support of Michael Winner's latest missive: | | | | Quote: Tesco ban on shoppers in pyjamas
A Tesco store has asked customers not to shop in their pyjamas or barefoot.
Notices have been put up in the chain's supermarket in St Mellons in Cardiff saying: "Footwear must be worn at all times and no nightwear is permitted." A spokesman said Tesco did not have a strict dress code but it does not want people shopping in their nightwear in case it offends other customers. He said he was not aware of any other Tesco stores having to put up similar signs. The signs are placed at the entrance to the store, on the city's outskirts.
They read: "To avoid causing offence or embarrassment to others we ask that our customers are appropriately dressed when visiting our store (footwear must be worn at all times and no nightwear is permitted)." The spokesman said: "We're not a nightclub with a strict dress code, and jeans and trainers are of course more than welcome. "We do, however, request that customers do not shop in their PJs or nightgowns.
I think it's stupid really not being allowed in the supermarket with pyjamas on. It's not as if they're going to fall down or anything like that Elaine Carmody, Tesco customer "This is to avoid causing offence or embarrassment to others." Elaine Carmody, 24, a full-time mother of two young boys, described the ban as "ridiculous" and "pathetic". She said she had regularly gone shopping at the store in her pyjamas until about a week ago when she was turned away when she went to buy cigarettes. She said she had been "popping in for a pack of fags," but if she had been doing a full shop "then we obviously would have gone in clothed". "But we only wanted fags and they still refused us to go in for a pack of cigarettes," she added. Ms Carmody, who spoke after spending £102 in the supermarket, added: "If you're allowed to wear jogging bottoms, why aren't you allowed to wear pyjamas in there, that's what I don't understand? "I think it's stupid really not being allowed in the supermarket with pyjamas on. "It's not as if they're going to fall down or anything like that. They should be happy because you're going to spend all that money." She went on: "It's not as if you're making a show, if anything, they should be happy because you're spending your money in their shop, but obviously they're not, because you're not allowed in with pyjamas. "So they're going to lose their custom, with people going to other shops to buy stuff and they're allowed in with their pyjamas on." | | | | |

This has been all over the local news for the past couple of days. Why on this Earth you'd ever walk into Tesco et al in your pyjamas is beyond me.
Thankfully I have yet to encounter anyone in their pyjamas in the Tesco on Western Avenue.

Tesco might see it's profits drop in it's late night stores if it took that to it's logical conclusion... And speaking of those, I suppose it's kinda like going to the corner shop in your PJs and housecoat taken to the next level I wouldn't, especially as I'm boxers-only (t-shirt too if it's really cold) , but I've little problem with anyone who wants to do it. Especially if it upsets people like Michael Winner

I wonder if they knew where their towel was? If I did, I think I might point and laugh at them hysterically for a very long time. There was a story last year about mums picking up their little darlings from school in their dressing gowns. I mean, I'm all for dressing casually but PJs are really not designed for wearing out doors. Also, it's January! Brrr!! I guess it's up to them though. I probably shouldn't laugh really.

FFS! I can understand doing it once for nappies if you've run out at three in the morning but regularly? Lazy bitch.

It is Tesco's right to deny entry just as it is hers to wear pajamas outdoors. What is she trying to achieve by drawing attention to herself though?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

This ties in nicely with Caz's thread on Britain being a nation of slobs I mean WTF! I've needed to go shopping for something in the middle of the night, usually meds when I'm ill and I'd never think of going out the house without getting dressed first...

Does that mean that Tesco's night-time customers are wandering around like this? Not in my local store they're not.

It takes what, one minute to throw on socks, pants, trousers and t-shirt? The busy mum argument just doesn't stand up for me. I've never seen anyone in a supermarket wearing their PJ's. If I did I'd probably thing they'd escaped from the local loony bin.

Paul1965's pic has me wondering, if the pyjamas thing really catches on, will we get women trying to outdo each other? I'd actually go shopping then
