This is def a good move.
It reminds me of something that happened at work this week actually.
We have just aquired a new business as part of our own and they have been migrated to the in house software that the rest of the company's companies use. (POS stuff)
One of the helpdesk (I use the word "help" loosely) guy phoned me to say that a report needs rewriting as it doesn't open on this guy's PC when I asked what he was trying to open it in it was Excel 2000 (trying to open an XML spreadsheet).
My reply went something along the lines of... "Seeing as Microsoft stopped support for Office 2000 almost a year ago I would suggest upgrading him to a later version of Office or you can pass it as a development request to my manager but I don't think it'll get very far." The fix was a free upgrade to Office XP...

It seems to be a common factor of any businesses using computer equipment. The newest equipment or software used has to be at least 5 years old.
