Having lived opposite shops which leave their display lights and signs on all night, I think it is a good thing.
Regardless of energy efficiency, flashing lights all night long are annoying, if you happen to live on the High Street.
If the shop is open 24 hours, fine. But if they are closed, why do they need to have the lights on at 2 in the morning?

This doesn't go for flash lights in the window or above the shop, but I always thought shops left lights on so that people outside could see in, thus if there was a break in and the alarms didn't sound, if someone was outside they might see and call someone, or something.

Won't most people have made the decision to live there knowing that? I always assumed it was a way of advertising who they were and what they were selling, getting noticed etc, even if it is at 2am It does raise the question of how dark would the streets be without store lights being on, maybe (street lighting ain't the best here I can tell you)

Perhaps more street lights should be installed, but they turn off at 1am. If you are walking along and want a light on, you press one of those little timer switches and the light comes on for 30 seconds Cars could have something in them which allows street lights to detect them and turn on the five lights either side of them, then the light would follow the car... Or something...

A good thing. I always think it is a waste when I walk past a shop with open doors and either a blast of hot or cold air is streaming out. Need to focus on office building as well, even though I think they can improve a city skyline at night.

And those that don't get a choice? My girlfriend lives opposite Lidl, Taco, K&K Schuhe and Rossmann - the last 3 were built in 2008 and opened end of 2008 / early 2009. She moved in in 2007...

That sort of thing comes up at council meetings here all the time, with residents opposing everything from shops to giant stores and airport flight times. They've even been known to win sometimes...

So you both leave all of your lights on and doors open in each of your houses 24 hours each day? I thought not, so if you won't pay directly then why pay indirectly. Ideally with lower operating costs any shop you patron should be able to offer the same goods for less. And can either of you say that you went into a shop soley because the lights were on and the door was open, rather than entering because your wanted a specific something from the shop in question?

No, but I shouldn't be told what to do or not to do by the likes of them. In this case it's advertising, people can see what's on sale 24/7, or at least they can while the lights are on.

I think this is a good thing. Of course, in an ideal world our electricity would all be from renewable sources and we could all waste as much as we like! But it's not, so we can't.

I agree, it's nannying on a falsehood to be seen to be 'doing something'

So, who should tell you when it's a pointless and wasteful activity? Despite best efforts, the majority of the nation does not have a 24hr culture, and those that are out at 3 or 4am aren't thinking about shopping.

But they may like to see the goods to decide if it's worth a smash and grab.
