They must all be getting close to a replacement? It has been a few years since they all came out. The prices need to get lower to get the last few remaining potential buyers interested.

I'm not sure when they came out off-hand, but the current generation of consoles are said to have decade-long lifespans as far as M$ and Sony are concerned - that means you'll probably have bought at least three in that time with the amount of breakdowns of course

The MS lifespan can't really be accurately measured due to them only having one previous console on the market

Sony seem to have a 7 year new console 10 year phaseout system though judging by the ps1/ps2/ps3 cycle

It's interesting though - the PS3 has plenty of power that's not being used which in time the developers will surely harness, and use to improve their games.

The 360 isn't as powerful, so you'd have to suggest it's not got as much potential for improvement.

Ergo, the PS3 should out-last the 360 by a few years?

The 360 is just as powerful

Difference is 360 is less powerful in terms of hardware, but the SDK is very powerful
PS3 hardware is more powerful but the SDK is very difficult to get the most out of it.

Either way there isn't a game out that pushes the hardware to the limit
And the PS3 will probably out last the 360.... the 360 did come out well over a year before the PS3 in the UK at least.

Even simply from the fact that the PS3 was launched later than the 360, you'd expect it be on the shelves a bit longer. There's also the fact that MS were rather... abrupt with dropping the original Xbox, whereas Sony seem to allow their consoles to 'overlap' much more. There is still PS2 software coming out now...

Doubt it. They still haven't made their money back on the current ones yet. Have a read of THIS. They think we're only halfway through the life cycle of the current consoles.

EDIT

Not quite the link I was looking for, I'll see if I can find the right one.

EDIT 2

I think THIS is the right link.

If we are still only half way through the cycle then maybe I will have to bite the bullet and buy one. I will probably get a Xbox and Wii first. Too few games on the PS3 I want to justify the purchase.

That's exactly my point - you can build on the software of the PS3. You can't build on the hardware of the 360.

Apparently the XBox 360 has been dropped $40 today at Amazon.

It's not building on the software, it's building on the SDK, it's entirely different and much more complex than optimising ones code.

If you think there's too few good games on the PS3, for the love of pie don't get a Wii

Also, come the time, if BRs are cheaper the PS3 may be the better option... I spose your main thing will be which exclusives you prefer though :)

TBH I do not have huge shopping list of games that I would be buying. Though there are already enough Wii games for me regardless of a single new game coming out. Longer term maybe the PS3 is a better option. Though I am happy to wait. BluRay is not a priority for me.
