A lot of things to excess can be bad for you even leading to cancer, but tobacco has a lower threshold. Overall I support the move but think that it should be more low key. Smokers already think that they are being persecuted. I do not smoke, I gave up when I was eight. Though I respect others choice.

Sorry big_D but you're somewhat a bit of a hypocrite. You've said before that you used to smoke so just because you stopped doesn't mean that you can then get judge how others live their lives.

In reality our lives are affected by others, that's the way of the world.

Yes but ex smokers are usually the most anti of all. I think that they realise how hard it was to give up. An acquaintance who happened to be a junkie, said that giving up smoking was harder than heroin. That said he was still injecting heroin.


Yes but in the past smoking was the norm so the figures depending on which era you choose would be very skewed.

Tobacco has only been a common currency since it was brought back from the Americas in the, what, 15th century? I think there were a few thinkers around before that.

You could no doubt come up with whatever conclusion you wanted.

When I smoked, I smoked around others who smoked. When I went out with friends who didn't smoke, I didn't smoke. I didn't smoke at home...

I'm not anti-smoking, but I do think smokers should be considerate to non-smokers. After all, smokers have made a choice to smoke, non-smokers have made a choice not to have their clothes and skin stink of cigarette smoke or "ruin" their health through smoke, so why should they have 2nd hand smoke inflicted on them?

I hate walking in town and getting a face full of someone elses smoke. I think it should be banned in public full stop. I think people should be able to smoke if they want but in the privacy of their own home. Its not forced on the rest of us that way (2nd hand smoke).

I also came back from the parents yesterday. Even though they didnt smoke infront of the baby her skin and clothes were covered in the smell. Its vile.

I hope it never is.

It eventually will and then in private.
Of course by then Alcohol will be banned as well fast food, sweets, sugary drinks etc. You will be healthy by order!!!


In my experiance those who winged and complained the most about smoking in pubs and said they would never go to them whilst they had smoking have yet to frequent these now non-smoking premises. This is one of the reasons why so many local pubs have closed down

Stopping smoking was easy

I went from 40 a day to nothing overnight. Here's a list of things that for me were much harder:

1. Excess eating
2. Sugary and Convenience foods
3. Cannabis
4. Painkillers
5. Muscle relaxants

At which point it won't be worth living anymore. People are so busy being outraged and offended by teeny little civil liberties things, that they won't notice the huge whopping civil liberties things and before you know it we'll be living in a "Eutopian Ideal" and won't have any freedom at all. This is one of the reasons I am determined to argue against every little erosion of personal freedom, so that when the shutters come down I won't have just been sitting there, taking it and "facilitating" events by my inaction.

Unless it's actually harming you (and asthma sufferers are obviously my main focus here) what's the big deal? RE: the parents, it's your choice to visit them and the choice you make is to then wash your baby and her clothes (which I would put money on that you would have to do anyway) It's no worse than coming home from a club with the smell of fake dancefloor smoke in your clothes and hair. It reeks, but you wash your clothes, wash your body and it's all over!!

If it is a trigger for something like asthma then you have the choice to not shop in places where the smokers have to stand by the door to smoke (and certainly not many business will encourage that kind of "front" for their shop) or if you accidentally get a lungful of smoke, then take the time to use your inhaler, or get a few lungfuls of clean air to clear your passages. It's no more of a problem than car exhaust would be if that set your asthma off.

The thing is, that rather than just banning everything that people don't personally like, why can't we just have a bit of tolerance for people who do things differently to us, some give and take with a bit of mutual respect would go a long way.
