Steak & Kidney please. Valentines day is just a another bullsh!t event, milked to oblivion by the Cards and Flowers crowd. If you need to make a crappy gesture of love to your 'special someone' just once per year, and to be coerced to do it too, then I suggest the relationship is in trouble already. Bah! I've run out of humbugs.

Do you feel the same way about birthdays? It's only coercion if you're a sheep. As I've said before; you have a mind. Use it.

I have no problem with buying a card and a little present and making a little effort to be romantic for once, but when it comes to commercialisation, I think that the proof of the pudding (or maybe pie) is in the eating when you can get Valentine's cards for just about every bugger that you know. I wouldn't be surprised if you can get them for your dog and your cousin, but I am pretty sure that you can get them for your mum! The one thing I can be sure of is that I'll be in trouble if I don't acknowledge it and "I'm sorry, but it's just blatantly commercialised" WON'T cut it!

Not being attached I can't say that V day bothers me in the slightest. The carpet bombing of pink cr@p all over the shops for a month or so is a little irritating I grant you. Having been born in November there's a passing possibility I have V day to thank for existing in the first place

I'm not sure if anyone in my family fits that bill, but I was born 9 months after my mum's birthday, my brother was born 9 months after my dad's birthday and my wife was born 9 months after her mum's birthday. I know damn well when both of mine were conceived and one was a late Christmas present, but only because we were trying hard and that was the ideal day of the month. I'd just worked a very hectic twelve hour day shift AND finished late and was absolutely knackered, but I still had to perform. The things I do for Queen and country. It's a hard life.

I spent years as a social pariah and only in the last two years have I ever got even a comment on V day. All my friends used to get something at least every other year yet I had nothing throughout all of my formative years and even throughout university. It was always humiliating and it still makes me cringe even though I'm getting married - the anger is still too near.
A good woman has pulled her head out of her arse long enough to see me for the great bloke I am but she's the only one that ever bothered and therefore is the only one not to miss out.
So, as far as I'm concerned, Valentine's Day can kiss my not-so-shiny, metal ass.
[LIFTED] OFF!

Not at all, the two are in no way similar. Birthdays mark something tangible, and are not shoved in your face by the stores, but only because they have no one date or time period to focus on. Valentines day is, to me, a meaningless christian religious celebration not even worthy of being marked annually. The 'pink carpet-bombing' serves only to annoy me further, as does peoples insistance that I should also mark the day; despite the fact that I am not religious. Cue comparisons to christmas etc...

Happy or Bitter? I think it depends if you are Al Capone or Bugs Moran really.

My girlfriend thinks it is cheap commercialism, so doesn't celebrate it.

The paradoxical thing about V day is that the gesture would mean more on the other 364 days of the year as it is not forced.

Having never sent nor received a Valentines Day card or gift in all of my 33 years, it means nothing to me. In fact, I've never actually had a girlfriend over the period in question. What winds me up is the thinly veiled assumption that you should have someone to make some sort of gesture to. As it goes, I'm starting my new job on the 14th, so I'm expecting lots of couples coming through and I'll have to play up the monogamy of the birds under my watch for the day. Deepest joy.
