How many of you do nightshifts regularly?
Just finished mine and absolutely shattered. Starting nights isn't too bad but I'm now exhausted. The hardest part is adjusting to dayshifts afterwards. Can take me up to 4/5 days to adjust.
If I can stay awake for another fourteen hours (making it 28 hours of being awake) I will be able to switch back. Probably is going to be staying awake when I'm ready to fall fast asleep.
Any of you do nightshifts? What do you do to switch from nights to days?

I never really got used to it. It used to take me about 3 days to readjust from nights to days. I really don't think forcing yourself to stay awake is the answer. Just try to make sure you get loads of sleep during your days off even if that means getting less the night before you start day shift. At least that way you'll be properly tired at the end of your first day back. Mark

Never got the hang of it either. Absolutely hated shift work, couldn't stand it.

Luckily I've never had shift work, I just work as long as needed, which is often a couple of hours longer than a normal working day, sometimes through the night. My dad did shifts, working for Group 4, but they were always irregular, a night, followed by late, followed by early, followed by night, followed by mid, followed by early, followed by night on the same day... I blame that, partially, for his death, a company shouldn't be putting that sort of stress on anybody, let alone somebody 2 months before retirement!

I did until I was made redundant. It was either easy to switch onto days or it took a day or two. It all depended on what time the chopper was from the rig to Aberdeen. Midday was perfect as I could get three hours in which kept me going until I got home in the evening.

how could anyone go into nightshifts without knowing concequences? people who are up late will have premature ageing of the skin and in the long run memory loss problems

I have to agree. I would have said that smoking excessive drinking and sunbathing do far more damage to the skin than late nights. I rarely go to bed before midnight and look ten years younger than my real age. though I do avoid the smoking drinking and sunbathing.

I worked nightshifts for 2 years and quite liked it. I worked from 11pm - 7am which is the same length as your average workday but it meant I could do things like pop into town or head to the bank during the day before I went to bed. I'd usually go to bed by 12pm-ish and sleep until 7pm or 8pm before getting up, having a bit of time with the family and then heading out to work when they were going to bed. It worked out perfectly for me and I didn't have any trouble adjusting. My dad reckons some people are more "tuned" to an anytime style of working, so nightshifts don't work for everyone, they do happen to work for both of us

Do we have a standardised forum style for bibliographies? Shall we settle for a standard Harvard scheme?
