Fracking livid. That’s how I am. Livid I tell you. First phone call bang on the dot of nine is a client who informs me that his web site is down. It is. And so are others I have on the server. I len learn, through a string of investigation that the server is being upgraded. No contact from the hosting firm, and judging from another email list I am on, the same is true everyone who uses them. They have my gmail address, so it’s not like they can’t contact me. What I don‘t want is to be told by a client that the server is broken. Apparently, it’s been down for over 12 hours at time of posting. I get either DNS errors or 500 server errors, or in one case a directory listing of the server. So today, I have to investigate alternatives, wait for the sites to appear and then decide on how to shift them from one company to another. As I said, livid. How is your Wednesday?

Blinkin' heck Paul, one hell of a morning there Might I suggest some script that runs on a local machine checking that the sites are still up and emailing you if they are not? Might give you a bit of a head start if something like this happens in the future. My morning wen't quite well I'm sorry to say. Successfully managed to set up a local opensolaris repository so I'm able to carry on with my project work (damn internet at home isn't working still)

Turned up for work expecting a morning of training with an ice cream machine, handling and cleaning etc. Kind of important, because I don't want to be poisoning people. Should all be done by midday. Then it's 'Oh, seeing as you're here, we could just get on with doing X,Y,Z...' So that was another 3-4 hours of the afternoon gone.

Have Host. Who have, until today, been pretty good and I’ve been happy with them. Today I am re-appraising this. The sites are still down (if you see my avatars return, you will know that it’s back), and from what I have learned it’s been down since around 10pm last night. There has been no communication from them save for a couple of very short emails which I had to badger at them to get. So I have been looking around for other places to dump my sites because as soon as they are up, I’ll be taking snapshots of the sites as they are on line and looking to move. When an MD of one company I work for (and who doesn’t even have a site on the server I am using - but he is helping his wider community) steps in to try to get the gurus at the hosting centre to do something, you know things are bad. I think I’ll be looking for a server in this time zone. I need a drink.
