I agree about the brick one - I have a gas one and it's like having a cooker in the garden. We've had 3 BBQs this year already.

Sorry, but it’s not a barbecue if it’s powered by gas, it’s an outside cooker. There’s no substitute for lighting the coals, opening a beer and relaxing for the hour or so it takes before the barbecue is ready. And the flavour with charcoal, as John_Vella said, is unbeatable.

Barbecuing is all about patience.

Amen to that! I'm sorry, but what's the point of cooking by gas outside? You may as well just stick the food under the grill. Less chance of flies in the sauce and bird poop on your buns.

I'm having a BBQ this weekend. I shall be piling up a large amount of dead tree in the middle of the lawn and setting fire to it. I shall then balance racks precariously on logs and throw sheep and pigs at it. Baste regularly until it stops going Baaa and Oink. I shall then burn the logs. By now, I may be quite drunk so I'll probably burn more stuff. Probably including me.

Don't knock it till you try it. You still get the wonderful bbq flavour but have more control over the heat so things don't get burnt and I've got a griddle on mine so have even done breakfast on it in the past. BBQd bacon is to die for!

One of things I like about bbqs is the fact that it does require a certain amount of skill when cooking, which to me isn't really needed when cooking with gas.

I thought with a gas barbecue you don't actually see the gas to cook the food, you use the gas to get the charcoal up to temperature quickly then you cook over the charcoal the same way you do with a 'traditional' barbecue. So the cooking part is exactly the same; you just don't have to faff around with bits of newspaper and lighters and all that...

Yep that's right. I have coals on mine and the gar runs underneath them.

But that’s all part of the fun.

So it’s either the same as cooking over coals or it’s not, make your mind up ;)

You can put a griddle on a proper barbecue, any kind of pan in fact. I do agree with you on one thing: barbecue bacon is delicious.

I beg to differ - I've seen lots of food [LIFTED] up on a clean burning propane BBQ.

My brother's got one of those. Very good but a bit of a pain to clean.

:D Not much you can do about fat falling onto the coals, apart from keep moving the meat about to stop it burning.

Went to buy one over the weekend, and discovered that I'm bloomin' skint until payday

Oh well - I'll wait a couple of weeks then it's off to B&Q
