TBH I thought they'd keep the Windowsy-ness of it with the Start menu and stuff.
BUT!
That is the stuff I really don't like about Windows mobile. It's Windows but deigned for a smaller computer screen, not Windows designed for a mobile phone.
This looks a hell of a lot better!
Any news on upgrading to it? My Dad has an HTC HD2 and I'd like to see if he can get this on it.
If it's as good as it looks here (and has some nice apps to back it up) then I think it's a worthy competitor for Android and iPhone.

That is what I thought. It may be a year before we get the actual handsets, it could give Android a run for it's money.

It was great at FOSDEM (Free Open Source Developer European Meetup, or something) the other week, tonnes of open source lovers saying how much they loved Android, then cursing because their Android phone wouldn't work I met up with a Google guy who was cursing his nexus one! It will be interesting to see how Win7 mobiles dig into the iPhone share. I don't know official figures, but out and about I see iPhones or ordinary 'dumb' phones...Nothing else...

My phone sends texts and makes calls. Nothing dumb about that, does exactly what it says on the tin.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Do you think the iPhone will be the big loser? They are in third place behind Blackberry and Nokia at the moment. I would have thought that Blackberry was the main competitor to Microsoft.

My initial thought was 'why doesn't the sodding menu text fit on the screen properly?'

Its exactly the same as the Zune OS that came out earlier in the year...
Hmm...another MS OS with a 7 in it that is exactly the same as a previously released product...hmm
I see a trend developing.

The more the merrier.
Bringing Microsoft back into the mix is a good thing.
I'm particularly intrigued by the Xbox Live feature. I don't know what they have planned exactly, but if the platform is easy to develop for, and gets some really good games then it could become popular with gamers.

The HD2 does meet the criteria (cap screen, HW buttons etc) so should at least have a cooked ROM at some point The app dev..... it's mostly non marketplace stuff I find the best place such as the xda forum. There is a free only market app available with some good stuff but it's still quite limited with the choice. Except the Zune OS is for the MS Pink, the Zune Phone, AKA the new Sidekick for the US market, is totally different hardware and aimed at a different market. Current build is 6.5 based on 6.0, this is a new build from the ground up, hence the new revision. The only part that looks like the Zune OS is the media playback, wonder why that might be? It looks like it because it was designed that way to be more mobile less Windows Desktop/Laptop. And it's the 7th version.... is a coincidence so hard to believe? I see a trend that the next Playstation console will be called the Playstation 4....... I must be psychic

As one tech commentator put it - and I paraphrase - the new MS phone OS looks good. Sadly, by the time it reaches the market its competitors will have sprinted off into the distance.
