http://www.techradar.com/news/televisio ... eed-670920Good article in general, but what do you make of this? That's my experience with a 37'' TV anyway, but I wasn't even that impressed with BR on bigger 1080p screens

Its killer app is its bloody price. reduce it so it makes sense to buy BR discs and guess what people will buy the bleeding things. Thats why I have near on 1000 DVD's and only 8 BR discs (and three of them came with the BR-player!!)

There was not the real benefit that DVD had over VHS. The improvements only apply if you have all the kit. Other than that it is overpriced. They need to make the price below a tenner for new films to get the public interested. While DVD's are still cheaper then they may struggle. Though we said this years ago on the dennis forums.

I have a top of the range 42" 1080p LED TV and HD is stunning on it but there is no way I'm buying a BR player until our current DVD players gives up teh ghost.

3D is clearly the supposed “killer app” for BluRay. The scramble to get some goggle-tastic tech into our homes will no doubt kick off when Avatar is released.

I bought a nice Sony just before HD was the rage, and it is still in pristine condition though maybe towards the end of the year I will get an 1080p TV though have not decided on anything yet. It will be because I want to get an Xbox and Apple TV so the PS3 with the BD will be much later.

It doesn't need a killer app, it needs a killer price drop.

I'm too nomadic to worry about big TVs and BR so it won't be succeeding from me.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

It doesn't "need" anything. It's a bloody good format with great quality and it's priced accordingly. Sure I'd like them to be cheaper, but when you consider the quality, you could argue it's reasonable.
The problem here is the average man on the street doesn't have anything beyond a 720p tv. No audio gear, and no decent tv. And they don't want it, because they don't care. Consumers don't care. Wake the [LIFTED] up marketing gurus. If Apple made Blu-ray and you could watch it on your pantyliner every man and his dog would buy it coz it'd be cool.
I only have a handful of the things, but damn do they look and sound gorgeous. A price drop would be nice, but the format is just where it needs to be.

I saw a BR film on a HD TV once. It looked fake, too good to be true. I think that as you can see film sets in better quality you can see that they aren't real.

Yes the definition is so good that you can see fake and cheap sets. It has bumped up the cost of film production as you can no longer skimp on the set. It has the same impact on porn. You can see every wrinkle and it has lead to a surge in plastic surgery to clean those spotty arses up. The porn industry is still unsure whether BD is a step too far. For many the cost of upgrading everything has been prohibitive. Though as people switch top HD TVs for Freeview and satellite it becomes a more feasible proposition. Then many have invested heavily in DVD and collections of many thousands are not uncommon. While the specifications are perfectly adequate the costs are still putting people off. When you consider that a film is produced in BD and DVD simultaneously then the public cannot understand the additional costs associated with a BD disk.

The thing is blue ray, HD telly and larger tvs will all become cheaper along with the films produced on the format just like dvd. DVD was invented in 1995 and didn't become especially mainstream until sometime in 2003.

Then you weren't watching Superman Returns, Iron Man, or a Dark Knight IMAX sequence. All this can't see it below 37" is bollocks as well. Tell you what, why don't we let you use Windows on a 22" wide monitor with just 576 vertical lines and then tell me you can't tell the difference between resolutions
