Rail fare rises of 13% 'may break government', campaigners warn

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/aug/1 ... ation-2012

Quote:
Hitting rail commuters with a swath of double-digit rail fare increases will carry "economic and political consequences" for the government, campaigners have warned on the eve of inflation figures that will mean some tickets rise by 13%.

Millions of rail passengers will get an indication of the fare increases due in January when the inflation rate that sets annual price rises is published on Tuesday.

Under the government's austerity drive, from next year season tickets will rise by the rate of retail price index inflation plus 3% until 2014, with room for a further 5% increase on some services. With the RPI due to hit 5% next week, commuters face a 13% increase on certain routes – to the dismay of passenger groups, environmental lobbyists and trade unions.

I doubt that. The public will get angry but do little about it.

Have they re-nationalised the rail service? Or am I missing something?

There are two primary types of train fares. Capped and uncapped. This is in the uncapped variety and the TOC's ( Train Operating Companies ) can do what they dam well please with them.

Agreed but the problem is that wages outside London are much lower. They might save some of the costs but their income will fall much more.

No, believe it or not we have "private" rail (fail?) companies, but the government spends more now through revenue protection grants and subsidies than it ever did on British Rail. Effectively, the taxpayer guarantees profitability. Nice setup there if you're a TOC.

Not neccesarily.

I worked in City of London (by Lloyds of London building) and my rail fare was like £1200 per year from leafy Surrey.

I decided to change jobs and ended up working within walking distance of my home for just slightly less money so I ended up better of financially and also quality of life improved.

You think that's bad? The EU want to scrap ass rail subsidies, which could cause rail fairs to increase by 50%.

When I was working as an accountant the wages outside London were half what I was making in the West End.

You want to tell me why TOCs should get subsidies? We might as well re-nationalise the railways.

The original idea was to reduce the subsidies yet they have stayed high. We should scrap the subsidises and wait for the companies to fold and nationalise them. British Rail was reliable and cheap. All that we have done is created new multimillionaires who own the rolling stock, and have effectively sucked up all the subsidises.

Woah! take off those rose-tinted spectacles there my friend. BR was occasionally very poor, occasionally very good and mostly mediocre. In fact, I'd say the performances of private and public train management has been pretty much identical. Of course now it's costing us more and we have a ticket pricing structure that seems to have been designed by Kafka into the bargain. Overall I'd have a nationalised service back but let's not pretend it was some idyllic 'Railway Children' utopia.

Of course that wasn't the intention of privatisation in the first place. Oh no.
