Looks like David Cameron wants to bring in a voluntary (?) version of non-military National Service for disaffected yoof as part of his attempt to mend broken Britain.

Quote:
The government is bringing in a national citizens service and Cameron said he wanted to make it available to all 16-year-olds: "Teamwork, discipline, duty, decency: these might sound old-fashioned words but they are part of the solution to this very modern problem of alienated, angry young people."

I'm assuming there would be some kind of pressure or 'inducement' to join, otherwise I can't see any 16 year old signing up.

More here.

You are either in education or have a job else you are in national service and if you have a police record you are in national service.

Who needs them to sign up. :D

Military sign up? No. Chavs with guns - could you imagine the horror?

But nonmilitary signup sounds like a good idea. Although as above, it'd have to be enforced and legislated somehow to make sure people weren't pretending to enrolled.

We have plenty of those already. Though they are usually tied to Football clubs. They clearly train each week over the winter. Looking forward to overseas operations under the national banners.

Germany scrapped conscription last year.

Every male had to do a years service, once they leave full time education. Those that either were too ill to serve (disabilities, asthma etc.) did social service instead (working as an ambulance crew, porters in hospitals, working in nursing homes or for charitable concerns etc.).

Females could volunteer to do it.

Now it is purely voluntary, I'm not sure it is a good move, to be honest.

Those serving would never been posted abroad to a trouble spot, that was just for regulars. I think it taught a lot of them a certain amount of discipline and team work, which readies them for the outside world.

I was told long ago that if something is voluntary or optional, people won't bother with it.

Depends on the details doesn't it? For example, there are quite a lot of 16-18 year olds who will do pretty much anything to get away from their parents. If the deal included being put up and fed, even in barrack style accommodation (or low grade student halls level stuff) then I'd imagine a fair number of teens would jump at it.
