My word was “horrible”, but same sentiment. forquare1, have you never heard of folders? Or the bookmarks menu? And surely auto-completion makes most of those redundant.

It's the way I work, I can see what I want and access them with one click, I can name them what I want and can forget the horrid URL underneath.
Menus and folders add clicks and mean that I need to know which folder to click in to, auto-completion means I need to know the url...Some of those links are coming up to ten years old, I have no idea what the URL is...
I must admit that is an old picture and I currently only have two lines, and about 95% of the links I use on a daily basis, a few others less so but are there to remind me to visit various places...

Tabs simply didn’t work properly at the top. At the risk of repeating myself (what does that mean? what risk?), I’ll repeat myself:

The most significant and controversial change is the location of the tabs. Tabs now sit along the top of the window, doubling as the application’s title bar, which makes for some awkward compromises. Click and drag a tab and it moves the entire window, unless you click on the tiny “Drag this tab” icon. And if you’re used to double-clicking to create a new tab, you will now minimise the window.

The placement of the Close Tab button is also awkward. In the leftmost tab it sits too closely to the traffic light buttons and because the button suddenly appears as as the mouse moves over an inactive tab it’s easy to inadvertently close a tab.

Apple says that it moved the tabs in order to free up more space for web pages, but that is unconvincing. Displays are much larger than they were when Safari debuted in 2003 and at most tabs obscured a couple of lines of text. Placing the tabs at the top is arguably a more elegant way of organising information but the implications have been fully thought through.

The worst thing about the latest version is that dumb page load progress indicator. Hopefully the hidden pref is still there to restore the Safari 3 progress bar.

howto Bring back the old progress bar …
Unfortunately, the new spinning progress indicator doesn't give you a good idea of how far the page has loaded. To bring back the old style, you have to use both of the following commands.

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4IncludeToolbarRedesign -bool FALSE

This changes the progress indicator to a blue pie chart. To get the blue bar, now use the following command:

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle -bool FALSE

Repeat both commands with TRUE at the end to go back to the new style.

I don't like playing around in Terminal....and I never understood why it is "wise" to have tabs sitting right below the bookmarks bar...much better having the tabs out of the way at the top, it's far to easy to click on wrong one, plus it took up less screen space as it was part of the bar that has the "traffic lights" and page title on it....

Howto Restore the old style tabs …
One of the biggest changes visually is the new tabs, located along the top of the window. If you aren't a fan of this, a simple Terminal command will move them back to the old position. Just open up Terminal (in Applications/Utilities) and paste in the following line:

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop -bool FALSE

To bring back the new tabs on top, just repeat the command with TRUE at the end. You will need to restart Safari for changes to take effect.

in FF i use 'tab sidebar' with preview enabled i can see about 4 'tabs' with preview disabled i can see about '15' tabs
no tab bar at the top or the bottom of the screen, just the way i like it …

So, I've cleared the registry of all mentions of Safari, deleted all the configuration files etc. and I have re-installed it on the Windows XP machine... I'll see if it was something hanging over from the previous versions....

Interestingly, it seems to have some sponsored links for the Top Sites, if it is a fresh install!

I have:
  • Apple.com (not really a surprise)
  • Yahoo Germany portal (didn't even know it existed).
  • Google Maps (never been there with this machine)
  • Google YouTube
  • Wikipedia Germany
  • n-tv.de (24 hours television news channel home page.
  • eBay (I've never visited fleabay from this machine)
  • faz.net (Major German newspaper)
  • amazon.de
  • süddeutsche.de (another major German newspaper)
  • flickr
  • Expedia.de
So it looks like they have signed up with some localised partners for each region.

Anybody else got examples of Apple supplied Top Sites?

Been using it since the re-install and it hasn't crashed yet (crosses fingers). I've been through about 20 tabs - it used to crash after 5 or 6. So it might have been some random debris from the beta hanging around and causing problems.

i tried a clean install (twice) but the cache for 'top tips' is hidden in /var

but no way (as yet) to disable, even via terminal, the whole of this in safari
if i want this i should be able to enable it but as of yet no way to completely disable it …

The terminal command you have given for tabs on top does not work. Hopefully somebody will come up with a solution soon.

Hmm, when Safari is running, Windows stops responding - mouse moves, but you can't click anything and anything typed appears up to 10 seconds later - not nice when you are working on a 600 page document!

Close Safari and everything returns to normal.

That is with a site displayed with no JavaScript and no Flash etc. CPU usage during this time is 0%, but the computer doesn't respond.

:?

Be interesting to see what background activity it's getting up to Dave.
Is there an events log, process reporty type thing you could check out?

Used it all day yesterday on my XP machine. A few occassional hang-ups, but it ran pretty well and didn't crash.

Not sure it is doing anything in the background - there is NO activity. Feels like the whole OS was put into a wait state.

I found this out last night too. My mate wanted the tabs putting back on top of Safari 4 and that hack failed. We even tried substituting yes/no for the true/false and that also didn't work. (8+(
