Or..... be able to use your smart phone for calls which ever way you pick it up or hold it!

I like that idea. If you have a phone which has an entirely glass body, why does it only have to have a display on one side? Why can't both sides be? And if you make the microphones smart enough they could be omnidirectional as well. So the phone then wouldn't have a 'side' at all.

I guess the argument is that you have to look at the phone to answer the call with touch-screens, so perhaps it matters less? On my olde Nokia, the answer button is dead centre, so it's quite easy to answer a call with the phone upside down (but not back-to-front).

With the way microphones currently are, the phone would still have a side and an orientation. if you could somehow design a mic that didn't need to be pointed towards the talker's mouth and a speaker that they could somehow hear without everyone else hearing, the phone could be any size or shape you like.

Maybe subcutaneous bluetooth technology is the way to go...

The same thing happened to me yesterday, whilst using the wife's iPhone... turns out that I was holding the phone upside down

As an aside, this is one of the big ergonomic failings of the current generation of smartphones and the iPhone 4 in particular, because it's extremely symmetrical.

There are basically four ways to hold a phone - right side up & right way round, right side up & wrong way round, wrong side up & right way round, wrong side up & wrong way round.

Only one of those ways - right side up and right way round - is actually what you want to do to use the phone. With most smartphones, there' s no obvious orientation changes or marks that allow you to know 'blind' whether you've grabbed it the right way when it's on your pocket or bag. Every time you pick it up, you've got a 3 in 4 chance before you use it you've got to re-orientate it in some way (or wait for the internal sensors to swing the screen 180 degrees for you, which is often slower than doing it yourself). With most Phones the back is at least a different material than the front but with the iPhone 4, even those are identical.

It would be ergonomically much better if the phones were asymmetrical in a way which would allow you by feel to always pick them up the right way. The back & front should feel different and ideally the top and bottom should too.

If only there was some sort of display you could look at that might give you a clue - it could even show you who's calling? Or maybe lettering on the back? Or a uniquely shaped button on the bottom? Or controls on the side that might help orientate it by touch?
Just throwing those out there. ;)

One thing I like about the SIII over the htc devices is that the pre-installed crapware can be de-installed.

On the Sensation, the "extras", like SoundHound, Facebook etc. were built into the ROM and couldn't be deleted. On the Samsung, they seem to be installed in RAM and they can be removed.

It also has the T-Mobile extras, such as Navigon and MailboxPro (T-Mobile's answer to Visual Voicemail) installed and their media hub, but again, these can be easily removed.

Exactly the same reason why I didn't upgrade to a HTC One X this year.
Bigger isn't always better.

JellyBean is on its way. Eastern European users are already getting it. Vanilla GSIIIs should get it shortly. If you have a "branded" contract phone, you'll have to wait until your carrier get's their rear in gear...

Now that's interesting. I've been with Vodafone for 13 years. Might have to switch.
