What meeting, and why the bricks?

Can't post in FPOTD thread today so... Morning all!

Forecast was bang on for a change - they said the rain would stop between 8 & 9am and it would brighten up.

Let's just say it's a very large multinational company that do printers & don't sell them on the high street.
Looking at hosting all their connectivity, infrastructure & unified comms.

It went well. Now I've got a lot more writing to do.

a mate dug out some spare 2x4 and a fire door from when he redecorated the flat when he bought it, so with a little help from the better half and one of our old lecturers, I now have a rather sizable desk!

Nice! Big desks are good. I feel quite strongly about that

I used to have a huge steel frame desk when I lived with my parents. Now I have to use the dining table to spread out on, which makes eating a bit of a faff if there's other folks 'round.

I do have a computer desk... but it's tiny and kinda buried under old 8 bit micros

I love a big desk. I use an old dining table as my desk right now and at some point might build a new desk.

"Regulation 7 Temperature in indoor workplaces
(1) During working hours, the temperature in all workplaces inside buildings shall be reasonable.
(2) A method of heating or cooling shall not be used which results in the escape into a workplace of fumes, gas or vapour of such character and to such extent that they are likely to be injurious or offensive to any person.
(3) A sufficient number of thermometers shall be provided to enable persons at work to determine the temperature in any workplace inside a building.
ACOP 42 The temperature in workrooms should provide reasonable comfort without the need for special clothing. Where such a temperature is impractical because of hot or cold processes, all reasonable steps should be taken to achieve a temperature which is as close as possible to comfortable. ‘Workroom’ in paragraphs 43 to 49 means a room where people normally work for more than short periods.
ACOP 43 The temperature in workrooms should normally be at least 16 degrees Celsius unless much of the work involves severe physical effort in which case the temperature should be at least 13 degrees Celsius. These temperatures may not, however, ensure reasonable comfort, depending on other factors such as air movement and relative humidity. These temperatures refer to readings taken using an ordinary dry bulb thermometer, close to workstations, at working height and away from windows.

You need to do something.

We know we don't have to be here, and the company know we're not happy, and the landlord is supposedly getting things fixed. The temperature ticked over 16 Celsius a little while ago, so assuming there's still some soup on the lunch trolley when it gets to our floor we can take our coats off this afternoon...

That's the trouble with temperature, there are no regulations as such, just an ACOP which isn't legally binding. In our old building we wore gloves and hats with our coats in the winter, summer saw people in water shorts and flip-flops, the company couldn't fix the problem because the building was so old so we had portable heaters under our desks for the winter and then each had a desk fan for the summer.

I used to work at a small "factory" in the village where the electric bar heater was turned off when it reached 16. The boss used to check it regularly.

The women there used to complain it was too cold, but personally I found it a lot more comfortable than the 30 defreese they'd have left to their own devices...

I quite like working in the fridge, which is maintained at 4C, but then I'm standing and moving. Normally the office has warmed up by now, but not yet. I feel sorry for the interview candidates we had this morning...

With the cold and stackoverflow being down, I'm not sure why I'm here! /sarcasm

Oh, and I got FreeSpace2_open working in Linux yesterday - it looks superb! :ugeek:

That looks awesome. It seems to claim Descent in it's lineage; a game which claimed many hours maybe months of my life. I had limited success with the open version of Descent, but that was very many years ago. Maybe I'll get this working over Christmas :D

Well she has a "private" health plan and you obviously care for her a great deal. There's a lot of cats who are treated very much worse :(

Good luck. I hope they can keep her comfortable.

Thanks, Jason. In herself she's quite perky - and hungry! We've been keeping her intake down on purpose since yesterday afternoon, much to her annoyance. Hopefully the tummy problem can be treated without surgery. I don't think surgery is the ideal outcome for an elderly cat, and I think the vet agrees. We just want Penny to be happy and as healthy as her age permits.
