They are probably better insulated than the old routemasters so do not lose heat as well. If we have a cold winter they might be more popular.

From the admittedly very tiny picture on the BBC website it looked like those buses don't have any opening windows. Seems like a bad design to me.

And that could explain the reason for it being too hot. I wonder how much it would cost to retrofit the buses with windows that open?

You don't want opening windows in an air conditioned bus. However you do want the air-con to work.

You can't air condition a vehicle effectively if it's stopping every 30 seconds and opening doors to let people on and off. Plus at low speeds (less than 50mph, ish) having the windows open is actually a more fuel efficient way to cool a moving vehicle than aircon.

It also has an open door at the back. So air-conditioning would be useless.
