I'm not convinced that's anything more than a bit of PR for the Tories (that could backfire if the ECHR calls their bluff longterm) and the Guardian doing a bit of handwringing.

I've no problem with life meaning life since we can't rely on the corrupt justice system if it ever came to executing scumbags, but for somewhat similar reasons you need an ongoing review process. The Met. amongst others are still fitting people up today, and who wouldn't go mental when wrongly thrown into a cell for 'life'?

[I have no problems with life tariffs but if they bring back the death penalty it will mean loads of innocent people being executed, especially after being fitted up by the police, and media.

It also means vast amounts of tax payers money being spent on legal aid for the plethora of appeals. I read somewhere that due to appeal costs in the USA, it's cheaper to bang someone up for life than it is to execute them.
